Career at Colorado—Ostensen closed out his stellar collegiate career with an All-America performance in his final race, taking home 10th place at the NCAA Championships and helping the Buffs to the team championship. He earned three All-America honors, two first team and one second team and two in classical and one in freestyle action. He earned mention four times on the All-RMISA squad, twice on the first team and twice on the second. He finished his career with 45 races, taking home top 20 finishes in 43 of the 45 (95.6 percent). He finished in the top 10 in 34 of his 45 races and had 11 podium appearances and two race victories. Strong in both classical and freestyle disciplines, he was slightly more accomplished in classical action, as he finished in the top 10 in all 21 of his 23 races with seven podium appearances and both of his victories.
2011 (Senior)—Ostensen raced in 10 of 12 possible races for the Buffaloes, sitting out the RMISA Championships due to an illness. He finished in the top 10 eight times and top five four times. He opened the season with a podium appearance, matching his career best freestyle finish at the Montana State Invitational. He backed that up with a fifth place finish in the classical race. He took home his other podium appearance in the classical race at the New Mexico Invitational. After a pair of ninth place finishes at the Denver Invitational, he missed the regional championships. At the NCAA Championships, helping the Buffs to the team victory, he finished 14th in freestyle and ended his career with a 10th place finish, earning second-team All-America honors as he helped the Buffs secure the national championship. He earned second-team All-RMISA honors and was named to the inaugural Academic All-Big 12 At-Large second team.
2010 (Jr.)—Ostensen raced in all 12 possible races for the Buffaloes as a junior, finishing in the top 20 in each race and the top 10 in nine of the 12 races. He has seven races in the top five and three podium appearances, all near the end of the season. He took second place in the classic race at the Nevada Invitational and followed that up with a third place in both the classical and freestyle races at the RMISA Championships, the freestyle race matching his career best in that discipline. He opened the season impressively with fourth place finishes in both at the Montana State Invitational and also had two top 10 performances at the Utah Invitational the next weekend. He earned first-team All-RMISA honors and was the No. 5 seeded skier in the west entering the NCAA Championships. He also was named the RMISA Skier of the Week for his performance at the RMISA Championships.
2009 (So.)—Ostensen picked up right where he left off after his first season as a Buff, rounding out the regular season as the No. 3 seed in the west. He tallied a pair of classical victories early in the season at the Alaska and Seawolf Invitational's, inevitably earning him CU Athlete of the Week honors. Of the 11 races his participated in, he claimed seven top five finishes, including an impressive third place individual finish at the NCAA Championships in the 10K classical, earning him first-team All-America honors. He was named first-team All-RMISA for his efforts, as well.
2008 (Fr.)—Ostensen had an impressive debut season as a Buffalo, finishing sixth or better in all six classical races and only placed outside of the top 11 in one freestyle race. He was CU's top-finisher as a freshman at CU's home Invitational and he continued to pace himself as Colorado's No. 2 skier for the remainder of the season. With a third place finish in the 20K classical race and a fourth place finish in the 10K freestyle at the RMISA Championships, he was one of six Buffs to earn a spot on the RMISA All-Conference second team. In his first career NCAA Championships appearance, Ostensen came out in his first race, the 10K freestyle, and claimed the bronze with a third place finish in 31:03.2. His third place effort proved to be the second best by a Buffalo male Nordic performer in their first NCAA race. With the podium appearance, he also became just the third male CU freshman to earn first team All-American honors. Two days later, he wrapped up his freshman campaign with a sixth place finish in the classical, adding to his All-American status and being named to the second team in the classical event.
Club—Ostensen joined Colorado from the Norwegian club Fossum IF where he has skied for the past several years. In 2006 he took second in the Norwegian Cup Race in the 7.5K Classical and then placed ninth in the same even at the Norwegian Championship. He was also a Regional Champion on more than one occasion.
In the Classroom—Ostensen is enrolled in CU's business school and is pursuing a degree in finance.
Personal-Jesper Ostensen, born May 18, 1987, is the son of Knut and Annethe Holm Ostensen of Hosle, Norway. He has two siblings, Vilde (16) and Simen (26), who is a member of the Norwegian national ski team. Ostensen was also recruited by New Mexico but chose Colorado because it is a great place to combine skiing and academics.
