2003?Read completed four of 10 races on the collegiate slate with three of the four resulting in top-20 giant slalom finishes. He opened his junior season with a 21st place slalom finish at the Montana State Invitational. A week later he finished 14th in the GS at the Alaska-Utah Invitational before being DQ’d in his next three races. He rebounded with a sixth place GS finish at the Western State Invitational and was disqualified twice more before closing out the season with an 18th place finish in the GS at the NCAA West Regional. He represented Canada at the World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy in January, Read finished 15th in the downhill (the third highest finishing Buff in the race), 23rd in the super-G, but did not finish the second his second slalom run.
2002? Read christened his second season with a 21st place effort in the giant slalom at Montana State, but turned his fortune around a day later with a career best sixth place finish in the slalom. He would go on to turn in six more top-20 and a pair of top-10 finishes the remainder of the season. His highest GS finish of the season would be two, 15th-place finishes in both the Denver and New Mexico Invitationals.
2001? Read posted three, top-10 finishes as a freshman, including a career-best fifth in the season opening GS in Utah. That same meet saw him finish a season-best ninth in the slalom, capping off his best weekend of the season. A week later at the Nevada Invitational, he would finish 13th in the GS before failing to finish in the slalom. He rebounded in CU’s Invite, finishing 22nd and 12th, respectively, in the GS and slalom. Following the regular season finale in New Mexico, he finished a respectable 15th in the GS at the West Regionals before being DQ’d in the slalom. Following the collegiate season, he finished fourth in the slalom in the Vail Spring Series.
Other? Read came to Colorado after a five-year stint (1996-2000) with the Canadian National Team. He also skied for his high school, Banff Mountain Academy, from 1994-97. Read was the 1998 Canadian Junior giant slalom champion and also posted a victory in the downhill at the 1998 Canadian Junior Championships. He claimed top prize in the giant slalom in back-to-back years at the Nabob Cup in 1998 and 99. He finished eighth in the GS at the Canadian nationals. He was the 1996 Alberta Alpine Skier of the Year. An “ultimate frisbee” player, his team finished second in the Canadian junior “ultimate frisbee” nationals in 1997.
Academics?Following five straight Dean’s List semesters and a perfect President’s List 4.00 last spring, Read has a 3.811 cumulative grade point average as a finance major and was named to the 2002 and ?03 Division I National All-Academic Ski Teams.
Personal?Michael Trent Read was born March 30, 1979 in Calgary, Alberta. He is the son of John and Sandra Read. An older brother, Rhett, works in the oil industry in Alaska. He continues to build custom log homes in Invermere, British Columbia during the summers. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
