Earned four letters under head coach Bill McCartney as a 6-foot-4, 230-pound inside linebacker from 1982 through 1986 … An Associated Press honorable mention All-American as a senior in 1986, when he was also a unanimous first-team All-Big Eight performer… Earned second-team All-Big Eight honors as a sophomore and junior … A two-time team co-captain, the first player to serve prior to his senior year since 1894 and just the third player at the time to be selected twice … Started 36 of 42 career games including two bowls … Remains Colorado’s all-time leading tackler with 493 total stops, including 245 solo stops … The 493 takedowns are one of just six career marks in the record book coming up on 39 years old … Second leading tackler in the conference behind Oklahoma’s Brian Bosworth his senior season (127, 58 solo) … One of his four career interceptions came late in CU’s 20-10 upset of No. 3 Nebraska in ’86, thwarting the last Cornhusker rally and ending the 18-game losing streak to the Cornhuskers … He also has 21 career tackles for loss (two quarterback sacks), 18 passes broken up, nine forced fumbles and four recoveries … Earned the Big Eight’s Defensive Player of the Week honor for his efforts in CU’s 21-17 win over Oregon the second week of the ’85 season when he had 13 tackles and a pass break-up … The first of just three players in school history to record three straight 100-plus tackle seasons … Had five games of 20 or more tackles, the most by any Buff in school history (his career high was 23 at Oklahoma State in 1984) … In his first start late in his freshman year, he had 12 tackles and two interceptions in a 28-3 win over Kansas in Boulder, McCartney’s first Big Eight victory … Overcame several injuries in his career, ranging from knee surgery as a sophomore (he received an extra year of eligibility as the injury was in 1983’s second game – he was off to a terrific start with 38 tackles in the two games), a pinched nerve in his neck and stepping on a bottle that sprayed acid into an eye late in the spring ahead of his senior season … Had won the Hale Irwin Award as the team’s top sophomore-to-be following the ’83 spring practices … Won the team’s Jacob Van Ek Award for academic excellence and the Hang Tough Award for overcoming adversity at the team’s senior banquet … Played in the ’87 Japan Bowl … The injuries prevented him from playing professionally … One of 10 in-state signees, considered the top recruit out of Colorado (a Parade All-American at Boulder’s Fairview High School) in head coach Chuck Fairbanks’ last recruiting class at CU … Today, Barry is a top-producing real estate agent in the Boulder/Denver area with WK Real Estate. … He and his wife, Brigitte, lead the Samantha Remington Angel Heart Foundation, created in memory of their daughter Samantha, who passed away at 23 after undergoing two heart transplants. The foundation provides financial support to families facing critical and life-threatening medical needs … Their children, Cassie, Carly and Jack all attended CU and help run the foundation as well, keeping Samantha’s spirit and legacy alive through their work … Graduated with a degree Business from CU … Born March 10, 1963 in Denver.
