He was a two-time Associated Press honorable mention All-American as a junior and senior (1982-83, 1983-84), when he earned first-team All-Big Eight honors … Arguably the best and most exciting Buff of the 1980s, he became the school’s all-time leader in assists (562) and steals (309) … He finished his stellar career averaging five assists and 2.8 steals per game … On the scoreboard, Humphries became the then-fourth all-time scorer (1,306 points, or 11.7 per game – he is still 14th on the list), with his go-to shot being the top of the key jumper which in his day was only worth two points … His specialty, however, was his defensive play, as he led the nation in steals with 115 for the 1982-83 season, which remains CU’s single-season mark; his 101 thefts his senior year (1983-84), ranks second on the CU list and was third in the NCAA … He had an incredible 10 steals against Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a junior … Humphries also holds the second (174) and third (173) season assists totals, in addition to the school mark in assists in a conference game (14), and double-figure assist games for a career with eight … He  had 10 career games with six or more steals … He owned a career field goal percentage of 49.8 percent, shooting .500 or better in three of his four seasons … He named to the league’s All-Freshman team for 1980-81 and was a member of the Big Eight’s All-Decade Team for the 1980’s (honorable mention) … The Phoenix Suns selected him in the first round of the 1984 National Basketball Association Draft (the 13th player overall); he went on to play 11 seasons in the NBA with four teams (Phoenix, Milwaukee, Utah and Boston), playing in 794 games and finishing with an 11.3 scoring average; he racked up 8,938 points, 4,424 assists, 2,033 rebounds and 1,161 steals … After his playing days, he went into coaching and has been an assistant coach with several NBA teams in addition to coaching in South Korea for five seasons and in China for one.
