Through the 2011 season, Zimmer, the longtime radio voice of the Buffs, had called 481 CU football games in his career, including the last 217 in a row (he’s only missed three bowl games, two due to contracts forbidding teams to originate broadcasts, and three regular season games due to travel conflicts); his 400th at CU was also the 1,000 of his professional career (at their current school, only Morry Mannies, Ball State (542) and Bob Robertson, Washington State (507) have called more games) ... He called 525 Colorado men’s basketball games in his career, and now has been behind the mike for 1,006 CU sporting events ... In 1992, he was awarded the “Honorary C” for his contribution to Colorado Athletics, and in 2005, he was the recipient of the Forever Buff Award from the Alumni C Club ... In 2009, Zimmer was honored as the 15th recipient of the Chris Schenkel Award, which recognizes those who have enjoyed a long and distinguished career broadcasting college football at a single institution ... Also in 2009, he was inducted into the Broadcast Professionals of Colorado Hall of Fame; in 2010, he was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame ... In 1971, he was hired by KOA-Radio & TV to handle on air sports as well as to do the play-by-play for CU football and the color commentary for the Denver Broncos ... Other than a short period (1982-84) when CU was not aligned with KOA, he has been synonymous with the Buffs for 39 seasons for football and almost 20 years for men’s basketball ... He spent 19 seasons doing the analysis for Bronco games, and then took over play-by-play for the next seven before retiring after the 1996 season ... Has taught in CU’s Journalism School since 2001.
