Buffaloes Fall To Oklahoma 4-2

October 02, 1999 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (8-4-0, 1-2-0) fell to the University of Oklahoma (2-8-0, 1-3-0) here by a score of 4-2 Friday night. The win marks the first for the Sooners over the Buffs in three years of play.

The Sooners dominated the early minutes of the game and scored early in the first half when Janette Coquat played a short through ball to Heather Martinelli at the 5:45 mark. Martinelli hit a shot on the ground to the left side of the goal to beat Colorado goalkeeper Danielle Bassett.

The Buffs tied the game when sophomore midfielder Heather Zonker teed off from the edge of the 18 and buried the ball in the upper right corner of the goal. Senior Shawn Kenyon gave Zonker the bal I at the 18 after receiving a pass from junior Andrea Matassa. It was Zonker's fourth goal of the season and her third goal in as many games.

Colorado took the lead at the 37:41 mark of the first half, when Zonker hit a cross in from the left side to the far post, where OU keeper Ayn Toppin bobbled the ball. Matassa took a shot, which Toppin saved but bobbled, and Kiefer was there to finish the rebound for her fourth goal of the season.

At the half, the Sooners held the edge in shots with nine to the Buffs seven, and the Sooners took the lone corner kick of the half as well. Bassett had two saves to Toppin's three.

The Sooners evened the score early in the first half, when sophomore defender Kendall Pata deflected an OU cross up over the head of Bassett to tie the game at the 50:0 I mark. The cross was taken by the Sooners' Shannon Wing.

OU took their second lead of the game at the 80:59 mark when Bassett saved a Sooner cross, but deflected it in front of the net where freshman midfielder Jennifer Enos knocked it in to go up 3-2. They extended their lead to 4-2 when junior Janette Coquat received a ball from 30 yards out, turned and immediately shot and scored with just 5:46 left to play.

With just three minutes remaining, Pata collided with an OU player and likely tore her anterior cruciate ligament and will be lost for the duration of the season according to trainer Kelli Lotito. An MRI either Monday or Tuesday will determine for certain the nature of the injury.

Oklahoma outshot the Buffaloes 22-10, only allowing the Buffs three shots in the second half. CU keeper Bassett pulled in seven shots on the day, while Toppin had the only three saves for OU.

The Buffs will now travel to Oklahoma State to take on the Cowgirls on Sunday at noon MDT. Colorado will return home next weekend to take on Iowa State at 4:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Soccer Complex. PVSC is located at the corner of Foothills Pkwy. and the Diagonal Highway in North Boulder. Admission to all CU home games is free.
