CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -Â The University of Colorado Women's soccer team (3-3-0, 1-1-0 Big 12) fell to No. 20 Duke University (5-1-0) Sunday afternoon 2-0 in front of 875 fans in Nike Carolina Classic action at Fetzer Field.
Â
"We played poorly in the first half, there's just no way around it," said head coach Austin Daniels. "We picked things up in the second half, but it was too late. We have got to do a better job of putting together 90 minutes."
Â
Colorado was led by freshman midfielder Tiffany Booth who managed two shots on the day, and sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Bassett who pulled in seven saves. Duke was led by senior Sherrill Kester who notched a goal and an assist on her 10 shots on the day.
Â
Duke began the scoring in the first half, when junior Liz Speights finished a pass from freshman Carly Fuller in the 25th minute of the first half. The Blue Devils notched their second goal of the half when senior midfielder Sherrill Kester weaved through the Buffalo defense and tucked the ball in the bottom right corner of the net. DU led in most statistical categories at the end of the first half, with 18 shots to CU's two. Colorado keeper Danielle Bassett pulled in three saves in the first half to lead the Buffs.
Â
The second half was more of the same, although Colorado came of out of the locker room with more intensity. The first half Duke controlled much of the possession in the midfield, keeping the ball buried deep in Buff territory.
Â
"The difference between the first half and the second half was our organization in the midfield," remarked Daniels. "I think they were coming down on us pretty fast and hard in the first half, and we did a better job of slowing that down in the second half."
Â
CU came out fired up in the second half, equaling their first half shot total in just 17 minutes, keeping Duke netminder Isis Dallis on her toes with shots drilled from the outside. Dallis had one save on six Buffalo shots on the day.
Â
Freshman defender Aimee Bugay was named to the Nike Carolina Classic all-tournament team for her efforts in the defense over both days. "It is a tremendous honor to be recognized for my play, but all credit goes to my teammates for their hard work all weekend," said Bugay.
Â
Colorado returns home to face Alabama on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder. The Buffs will try to retain in-state bragging rights when they take on Colorado College on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m. All Colorado home games are free.
