Colorado Shuts Out Colorado College 1-0

September 19, 1999 | Soccer

BOULDER -- The University of Colorado women's soccer team (5-3-0, 1-1-0 Big 12) defeated Colorado College (5-2-0) 1-0 Sunday afternoon. This is the second win in as many years over CC, with the Buffs retaining "bragging rights" for women's soccer over the Tigers.

The win over CC keeps Colorado's home winning streak going, with the Buffs going 4-0 at home in 1999. The five wins in eight games is also the fastest CU has gotten to the five win threshold. "Colorado College played well, they battled us hard." said head coach Austin Daniels. "It is nice to grind out a win, which is what we did today. The rivalry between our two schools just keeps getting better and better."

Sophomore midfielder Heather Zonker tallied the lone goal of the game at the I 7-minute mark, recording her first goal of the season and second of her career. She dribbled down 20 yards on the inside of the field and lofted the ball over CC keeper Kristin Masunaga. Ten minutes later, the Tigers made a keeper change bringing Jenny Watkins in for Masunaga. Masunaga faced five shots, tallied one save and allowed one goal in her 26 minutes of play.

"I got the ball and the CC defender tried to contain me and force me to go to one side, " Zonker said. "I had some open space and just went the other way and carried that ball down the field. I got the shot off at the right time and it went high over the keeper. We all played together, and showed that if we play the ball quickly and give each other an option right away, it is easier to maneuver around them. We had to work today. CC is a good team."

At the half, CU recorded 10 shots to CC's two. Buffalo sophomore keeper Danielle Bassett had one save in the first half while CC's keepers Masunaga and Watkins combined for five saves. The Tigers took five corner kicks while allowing none for the Buffs in the first half.

Although there was no scoring in the second half, the excitement built as CC's Kacey Clark received a yellow card in the 61st minute. The Tigers had eight fouls on the day while CU recorded 12. The Buffs added seven more shots in the second half, bringing their total to I 7 on the day. Zonker led the way with six shots of her own, making her shot total on the year to 20 and 63 in her career. The shut out was Bassett's second of the year, tallying three saves on the day and facing eight total Tiger shots.

The win over Colorado College was especially sweet since both head coach Austin Daniels and assistant coach Dang Pibulvech were coaches for CC in the I 980's. Pibulvech led the helm for the Tigers from 1983-1989, Daniels assisted Pibulvech from 1986-88.

The Buffs continue their "bragging rights" series at home Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 when they face Air Force. They will play again on Friday, Sept. 24 at 4:00 p.m. against Utah. The Utes defeated the Buffs last season 1-0 in Salt Lake City, so CU will be looking to avenge that loss. CU will then have their first Sunday off of the season, and will then continue the in-state slate as they face DU at 4:00 on Wednesday, Sept. 29. All home games are held at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex and are free to the public.
