September 24, 2000 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Colorado women's soccer team (4-6, 0-2 Big 12), lost its thirdstraight here Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 10 Texas A&M University (7-3, 2-0 Big 12) by a score of 6-1.
"We did not go to the ball. They went to the ball and beat us to the ball and that was the difference," said head coach Austin Daniels. "They got their chances off of better effort than us. All of us, myself and the players, are going to have to re-evaluate where they want to be and what kind of team they want to be."
The Aggies dominated the Buffs in the first half, outshooting Colorado 13-5 to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Erskine came up with several good first saves, however the Aggies were able to capitalize on the rebounds. Texas A&M got first half goals from Andrea Starns at the 10:59 mark and Heather Ragsdale at the 25:34 mark.
Colorado came out of the halftime break hard, putting relentless pressure on the Aggie defense. The Buffs changed to a three forward offense, leaving the back with three defenders instead of their usual four backs and two forwards. The Aggies took advantage of the CU change in formation, using the space behind the Buffalo defense to create scoring chances.
Anne Tamporello got the first of two goals at the 49:39 mark, then her second came less than 10 minutes later at the 58:26 mark of the game, off assists from Michelle Royal and Ragsdale. A&M scored their fifth goal when Jessica Martin finished her third goal of the season with less than 20 minutes to play.
Colorado got their lone goal late in the second half, when junior midfielder Heather Zonker crushed a shot from 25 yards out to get CU on the scoreboard at 72:30. Senior defender Allie Gausman gave Zonker the ball on the throw-in, which Zonker touched and then finished in the top left corner. It was her second goal of the season, and Gausman's first assist. The Aggies got their sixth and final goal with less than four minutes to play, an unassisted effort from Amber Childers at the 86:10 mark.
Erskine finished the game with 10 saves, five coming in each half. The Aggie goalkeeping tandem of Esther Thompson and Angela Barker pulled in three saved. CU finished the match with 11 shots to A&M's 26.
Colorado returns to action this weekend, taking on Oklahoma State at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 at Pleasant View Soccer Complex in Boulder. The Buffs will then face Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1.
