November 24, 2002 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER - The Colorado women's basketball team led from the opening tip and turned 35 turnovers into 37 points as they defeated Detroit-Mercy 86-43 at the Coors Events Center Sunday afternoon.
The Buffaloes had four players in double figure scoring led by Sabrina Scott who scored 18 points on 8-10 shooting and had seven rebounds--moving her into 10th place on CU's alltime rebound list, surpassing LeeAnn Banks--and four assists, while Tera Bjorklund had similar numbers with 17 points to go along with her five rebounds and four assists. Kate Fagan and Di Spencer each finished with 10 points.
"I thought that we played very tough today," said Colorado coach Ceal Barry. "Both teams came out and wanted to win. We ran well and played hard and with confidence."
Colorado got on the board first with a pair of free throws from Bjorklund and limited Detroit-Mercy to just one basket, a three-pointer by Sara Crum, in the first 10:02. The Buffaloes led by 21 points, 41-20, going into halftime after Maria Billingsley hit a lay up with six seconds left in the half.
Detroit-Mercy got as close as 20 points in the first 2:01 of the second when Caitie Goodard knocked down a three-pointer. But Colorado then went on a 41-18 run-including all 10 of Spencer's points-to end the game and pick up their second win of the season, after beating Rice on Friday.
Detroit-Mercy was led by Elizabeth Krzyzek who was the only player in double digit scoring for the Titans with 13 points. Detroit-Mercy, who were plagued by turnovers all game and had 19 of them in the first half, were also held to just 28 percent from the field on 15-53 shooting compared to Colorado's 53 percent.
The Buffaloes are now looking ahead to this upcoming Friday as they host Hartford in the first round of the 16th Annual Coors Classic. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Ohio State and Villanova will be the other game in the tournament and will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the Colorado/Hartford game at 8 p.m.
Colorado has won six straight Coors Classic championships including last year's 88-58 win over Houston.
