BOULDER - Tera Bjorklund scored 21 points on 10-12 shooting, and Sabrina Scott had seven rebounds and 11 assists without a turnover as the University of Colorado women's basketball team defeated Nebraska-Kearney 86-53 at the Coors Events Center Friday in their first of two exhibition games before taking on Rice Nov. 22. It was the second time in three years the Buffaloes have defeated the Division II school to open up exhibition play.
"I think we are going to be a good team," said Colorado coach Ceal Barry who is in her 20th season with the Buffaloes. "We have the pieces of the puzzle, but we just need to take the time and find out where to put them."
The biggest pieces of the puzzle were in the forms of Bjorklund who had 13 points in the first half, most of which came from Scott who dished out eight assists in the first.
Colorado went on a 18-2 run with just over six minutes left in the first half to pull away from a Nebreska-Kearney team that liked to quickly push the ball up the floor, and led 45-21 at the half.
Nebraska-Kearney got within 18 points of Colorado with 15:10 left in the game but another run started by a short jumper from Kate Fagan kept the Lopers from getting any closer.
Colorado shot 63 percent from the field and forced 29 turnovers in the game, but shot just 9-17 from the free throw line. Randie Wirt came off the bench to score 12 points on 6-7 shooting in 20 minutes of action. Di Spencer and Syreeta Stafford each had 10 points for the Buffaloes who will host Spartak Moscow in their final exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Lopers were led by Allison Kruger's 16 points and five rebounds. Kalee Modlin scored 1o points for Nebraska-Kearney, who lost to Colorado 82-46 on Nov. 2, 2000.
