Torres' Title Earns Athlete Of The Week
December 03, 2002 | Cross Country, General
BOULDER - Senior Jorge Torres won his first national title at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 25. Torres' triumph came in course record time of 29:04.7. Torres became just the third American in the last 15 years to win the men's NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Torres ran neck-in-neck with Alistair Cragg of Arkansas going down the final stretch but pulled away in the final seconds, crossing the finish line two seconds before Cragg.
Torres completed his senior season without losing one race, emulating Kara Grgas-Wheeler's undefeated 2000 season. Torres' perfect season ended in the perfect way with the title.
The CU men, lead by Torres' title and his twin brother Ed's 10th-place finish, finished fourth in the men's team standings, while the women who were lead by Sara Gorton's own 10th-place finish, finished fifth.
