Buffs Top Cal, Win Oakland Classic

OAKLAND, Calif. - On the strength of a double-double from junior Tera Bjorklund, the CU women's basketball team defeated California 66-47 and won the Oakland Tribune Classic here Sunday afternoon. Sabrina Scott was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Bjorklund joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
Bjorklund had 18 points and 11 rebounds and also added three blocks and two assists to an all-around solid effort. Scott had nine points, five rebounds and four assists. For the tournament, Bjorklund averaged 16.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 blocks while Scott put up averages of 13.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals en route to the MVP award.
Kate Fagan joined Bjorklund in double figures against the Bears with 14 points and five assists, and sophomore Syreeta Stafford, playing in her home state of California, chipped in 10 points and also had four steals defensively. Timea Ivanei led the Golden Bears with 10 points and five rebounds, while LaTasha O'Keith had a season high 12 points, also grabbing five boards.
Colorado led the Golden Bears 35-22 at halftime thanks to 4-4 shooting from Scott, who scored nine points in the first half while grabbing four rebounds. CU never trailed in the game thanks to tough defense in the early going, forcing Cal into nine first half turnovers and just 32-percent shooting (9-28).
The Golden Bears cut the lead to 11, 52-41 on free throws by Khadijah Coakley with 7:53 to play, but that was as close as the game would come. CU went on a 12-3 run down the stretch to lead by 20 on a free throw by freshman Amber Metoyer, their biggest lead of the game.
Colorado will now face in-state rival Colorado State on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center in Boulder.
