Men's Golf In Seventh At Pepperdine

SOMIS, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team stood in seventh place here Monday after the first two rounds of Pepperdine University's Club Glove Intercollegiate, but the Buffaloes are well within striking distance of a top four finish.
Host and No. 55 Pepperdine is running away with the meet, as the Waves own an 18-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round. Pepperdine posted a 571 team total, while No. 14 Arizona State is a distant second with 589. Colorado is in with an even 600 score to place seventh, but trail fourth place Kansas (No. 21) and Tulsa (No. 44) by just two strokes and are a single stroke behind No. 10 Arkansas. The Buffs, ranked No. 90 in the nation, hope to jostle up in the rankings as nine top 60 teams are competing here, including four in the top 25.
Colorado was in fifth place following the morning round, as senior Kane Webber was one of only 11 players in the field to shoot par or better, with his even-par 72 paving the way for an 8-over 296 total for the Buffs. Host Pepperdine shot a blazing 8-under to own a 14-stroke lead after the first 18 holes.
Pepperdine's Michael Putnam is the individual leader through 36 holes, as he put up a 67-73?140 scorecard Monday, good for a one-shot lead over teammate Randy Creighton (71-70?141). Lurking in fourth just four out is Webber, who carded a pair of even 72s for a 144 total on the 6,858-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club course layout. CU sophomore Edward McGlasson is tied for 20th after posting a solid 76-74?150 effort.
?It's a big day for us tomorrow,' CU head coach Mark Simpson said. 'With Kansas and Tulsa both in our district and just ahead of us, an obvious goal of ours is to beat both of them. But we also need to come up with four good scores to count, and the pressure is on to find two guys to do just that. Kane and Edward are playing well; Kane made a deuce on a par-4 in the morning, holing one from the fairway on No. 5 with an 8-iron from about 160 yards.
'The greens here are a challenge, and quite frankly, if you don't know them, they're tough,' Simpson added. 'It's an advantage for sure for the home team, and they're capitalizing.' Of the 126 rounds played on the day, only 21 were recorded at par or better, with 12 under par including five by Pepperdine golfers.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be completes with a shotgun start Tuesday morning.
