M GOLFERS FINISH SEVENTH AT PEPPERDINE

October 07, 2003 | Men's Golf

SOMIS, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't inch its way up the standings here Tuesday and wound up finishing seventh in Pepperdine University's Club Glove Intercollegiate.

Host and No. 55 Pepperdine cruised to an 11-stroke victory in the meet, as the Waves rode an 8-under par opening round in leading from wire-to-wire in finishing with a 7-over 871 total.  No. 14 Arizona State grabbed second with an 882 count, while Tulsa used an even final round as a team to jump into third, closing at 886.

The Buffs, ranked No. 90 in the nation, will likely move up in the rankings as CU finished seventh with a 902 score, but defeated two top 20 teams in the process (No. 13 New Mexico, No. 17 Texas A& M) and knocked off two others ahead of them in the polls.

Pepperdine's Michael Putnam also led from start to finish in grabbing medalist honors, finishing with a 75 for a 215 total which was good for a one-stroke win over Tulsa's David Inglis, who scored a 71 Tuesday.   Senior Kane Webber, who finished 10th despite some bad luck, paced the Buffaloes as he recorded a 72-72-75?219 to finish four strokes out.  Those four strokes could be traced to one hole, where he took an eight on a par-4, largely due to a two-stroke penalty when he double struck the ball on a chip shot from the rough.

CU sophomores Derek O'Neill and Edward McGlasson finished tied for 23rd and 32nd respectively, as O'Neill had CU's best effort in the final round (74) and McGlasson survived a quintuple bogey for a 78 on the last lap around the 6,858-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club course layout.

?This was a good test on a quality and quite challenging golf course, so it tested our games for sure,' CU head coach Mark Simpson said.  'We need to shore up some things in the four and five (man) positions, but we're going to be just fine.  We had to count two quadruple bogeys today; both were sort of flukes, but Kane had to take an eight on a par-4 and Edward took a nine on a par five.  So that's eight strokes right there that I'm not going to worry about, but it would have been nice to have.'

The numbers backed up Simpson's notation of the course being a challenge: of the 186 rounds played over the course of the two-day affair, only 31 were recorded at par or better, with just 17 under par and just one round in the 60s (scored by Putnam when he shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round).

Colorado returns to action later this month at Stanford's 'The Nelson,' scheduled for Oct. 24-26.
