COLORADO 67, NOTRE DAME 63

November 15, 2003 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL; “We couldn't hit a shot all night and when our backs were against the wall, we hit those two big threes. We hit two shots right at the end. I think our team grew up a lot tonight. Between the hours of 8 and 10, we grew up a lot. It's just a great win for our program.”

“I've never, never been on the bench for a game like that. We were down 12-0 against the 15th ranked team in the nation and able to battle back and hit that three just to get into overtime on a busted play. I've never seen anything like that. I think it's a good omen for our future.”

ON THE END OF REGULATION: “We had Veronica (Johns-Richardson), Leslie Howard and Anna (Nedovic) out there and we just wanted (Emily) Waner to find any of them. We told her to look for two and we could foul. They had Leslie covered really good, and then she tripped over VJ, and I think that confused Notre Dame as much as us. We might have to try that again.”

ON PLAYING G LESLIE HOWARD AT THE END: “Nobody else was hitting anything. I know she can shoot the ball, the team knows she can shoot the ball, and it obviously changed the energy out there.”

ON DEFENSE: “Randie (Wirt) worked hard tonight. She's our unsung hero. She just did a tremendous, tremendous job down there. Veronica and Amber (Metoyer) guarded her too, but Randie was our defensive stalwart down there.”

“We really wanted solid defense on (Katy) Flecky and (Megan) Duffy. We really felt that they shouldn't be in double figures. I don't know what Flecky got, and I know that Duffy did hit double figures, but we knew that Batteast was going to be tough.

Colorado Players

C Tera Bjorklund

GENERAL; “They threw a lot of stuff at me. I'm really worn out after a game like this. They did a great job of defending and hitting me with different match-ups. They really made me work tonight.”

F Veronica Johns-Richardson

GENERAL: “This shows a lot of leadership on our part. Of course we have our seniors who step up big, but everyone else really stepped it up also. It was great to see the younger players in there with as much heart as the seniors and we really came together.”

ON THE SHOT AT THE END OF REGULATION: “When it came out of my hand, I couldn't believe it. The only shot I was able to make all day and it was that one. As a shooter, you can feel when your shot is going to go in and when it's going to miss. I knew all my other shots were off, but not that one.”

G Emily Waner

ON HER BIG SHOTS: “That's why you practice. I shoot everyday for these type of situations, so I was ready for it. They felt really good. I was trying to be mentally ready if I got my shot, so I was prepared to take the shot. I was excited to get the opportunity.”

Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw

GENERAL- “I thought Colorado played really well tonight. Their defense did a really great job. I think we were out of offense toward the end, and they (Colorado) are a really physical team. It was a great defensive effort on their part. I also thought (Emily) Waner had a great game. She scored those three's at the end, which is a pretty big game for a freshman. I think we lost our poise down the stretch, and Colorado had a great defense, and that was it.

ON WBCA CLASSIC- “I thought this was a great field, and there were some great teams here. It (the tournament) gave us a good challenge, and some strong opponents for us to play.”

Notre Dame F Katy Flecky

GENERAL- “They were pressuring the ball well, and have a tough defense because of their denial. I hate losing to Colorado. It's always tough, but we have to come back and work harder.”

ON FACING QUALITY TEAMS IN THE TOURNAMENT-“It helps us get in the right frame of mind for the rest of the season. We have Tennessee coming up, and it will be a really big test for us.”
