Postgame Quotes - California
November 29, 2003 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry
GENERAL: "I felt like we were never able to get the momentum. We played and never lost the lead but we just couldn't get it going. We're happy to get the win, get our record to 5-1, and go into December with some confidence, but there is a lot that we need to improve on."
ON CALIFORNIA TURNOVERS: "They run the same offense as us so we knew most of the things they were going to throw at us. I think our players might have jumped in on a couple of passes because they have the same offense as us. Our real problem was missing a bunch of lay-ups and that really hurt us."
ON DEPTH: "Having Anna (Nedovic) and Whitney (Law) out really hurts our depth. They were our eighth and ninth players, so that really cuts us down to a seven player rotation. We don't have the depth that we had last weekend so we are just going to have to work harder."
ON LATE 3-POINTERS: "Kate's (Fagan) long range three was huge, and (Emily) Waner hit a huge shot as well. But even after those shots we were never able to run away with the game so you have to give credit to Cal, they played us tough tonight."
Colorado Players
G KATE FAGAN
GENERAL ? "I think that we were a little lethargic tonight. We knew their offense well so we were able to cause a few turnovers, but it wasn't our best effort."
ON LONG-RANGE 3-POINTER ? "I knew that we worked the ball around and couldn't get it into Tera (Bjorklund) so we had to make something else happen. I looked up and saw the clock so I just threw the ball up there. Of course it was a shot, but those things are not really skill, it's more luck than anything."
C TERA BJORKLUND
GENERAL ? "Coming into this game we knew most of their options on offense so I thought we were able to contain them pretty well. We have a lot of things we can improve on going into our next game."
California Head Coach Caren Horstmeyer:
GENERAL: "Colorado is a very good ball club. They have weapons in every position. They did a great job defensively. We have never been able to be in a position where we cut the lead to five points with two minutes left in the game against a nationally ranked team."
"The difference in the game tonight came from turnovers. The goal is to force the other team to turn the ball over and we were the ones turning it over. We had 30 turnovers and they had 18. Colorado's defense was forcing the turnovers, which I know is something they have been working on and they did it."
"We are a much better team this year. We have a team of veterans and that makes a big difference on the road and in difficult games. Our offense has also improved. We need to evaluate our defense."
ON G KRISTIN IWANAGA: "She is a strength throughout the game. She keeps calm and comes through when she is needed. She hit some big shots in the second half."
ON F LEIGH GREGORY: "I have to credit her because last night she had a rough time. I was pleased with her defensively and she shot five of six."
ON CEAL BARRY: "I have to credit Ceal Barry. We came here this summer and she worked with us and taught us a lot. We worked with her offensively and adopted her style. We feels very close with Colorado and appreciate Ceal's help. We have improved our scoring percentage since last year. We shot 48% tonight and we have shot over 40 percent all season. This is a huge improvement for us offensively."
California Guard Nihan Anaz:
General: " We played really hard and fought to the end. We played really good but we made mistakes at the end."
"We lost at our house last year by 20 points, and we came to their (Colorado) home and improved. We played as a team against a team like this, a top team."
"I need to stay consistent with my performance. I need to continue shooting and be consistent. I need to score more."
