Colorado 71, Wyoming 39 Post-game Quotes

December 28, 2003 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL: “I thought we came out with a lot of focus. I felt like our offensive game in the first half was as good as we've had this season. I think coming in we definitely wanted to get out and defend No. 24 (Ashley) Elliott. " In the second half, I subbed about 1:30 in and had a lot of freshmen and sophomores out on the floor. I really wanted to give them a lot of minutes. I thought Leslie (Howard) played well and Anna (Nedovic) was kind of in an out.”

ON MAINTAING FOCUS WITH THE LEAD: “In the first half, there was no question we were able to. In the second half, some of our shots weren't falling and we had a lot of new combinations of people. They (Wyoming) definitely got more aggressive in the second half. They hit the boards and got more aggressive on their screens.”

ON GETTING BACK INTO A GAME SITUATION: “We've had a lot of injuries and we really don't have enough players to have a good practice, so it's helped to have this competition and these next few games before we get into the Big 12.”

ON VERONICA JOHNS-RICHARDSON'S INJURY: “I had her dressed today because Sarah Lini hurt her shoulder and I wasn't sure if she was going to be able to go. I'd like to see if I can get her (Johns-Richardson) back on the court on Tuesday night against Syracuse.”

ON THE YOUNGER PLAYERS: “I really wanted to get the younger players in there. I had three freshmen and a sophomore player out there. Randie Wirt doesn't need game experience, Kate Fagan doesn't need game experience, Tera Bjorklund doesn't need game experience, so I think the biggest thing was I wanted to get those younger players more experience.

ON FACING SYRACUSE ON TUESDAY: “I know they'll be disciplined. We had a tough time with them at Syracuse last year. I'm pretty superstitious though, I didn't start thinking about them before this one was over. I'll take a look in the next couple of hours and get a better idea.”

Wyoming Head Coach Joe Legerski:

GENERAL: “Playing a game against such a high caliber opponent, you have to come in ready to compete. In the first 20 minutes of the game Colorado was dominant in every phase of the game. Their 43-12 lead at the half was a big statement.  Colorado was able to take us out of every aspect of the game.”

“In the second half we improved with our young players.  We had great effort from Kristen Lenhardt and Lorissa Ewing, who came off the bench and had her first significant minutes of the year.”

“The difference in the second half is that we played with more confidence, we kept a persistent amount of pressure, we tried to get more open shots and have the confidence to make the shots.  Using zone we tried slow down the game, but Colorado was still able to make three-pointers and create problems.  Colorado is a team that is very deserving of their ranking.”

ON C TERA BJORKLUND:  “Coming into the game we knew we were going to problems defending the post.  Either way we had Tera (Bjorklund) making shots on the inside and Kate (Fagan) on the outside.  Going in we just hoped shots wouldn't fall easy for them.”

ON WYOMING'S YOUNG TEAM:  “We came into the season with eight freshmen and only two players with significant minutes.  It is a big challenge with a young team, but we try to take the game in small parts.  We are trying to improve with each game, but we have a long way to go and we cannot be in a hurry because there is no quick way there.”

Colorado Players

G KATE FAGAN

ON HER EARLY INJURY: “It was fine.  I just bumped my elbow a bit.  Then, when I made a (3-point) shot, I said, “Oh, it's feeling good.”

ON LOW PLAYING MINUTES: “It's nice just to be able to cheer for kids who don't play much and get rested.  I think game experience (for younger players) is the best thing?getting everybody in there to see what they can do.”

ON THE TRIANGLE OFFENSE: “I think we're running it pretty well.  Sometimes we look at old tape with Jenny (Roulier) and Mandy (Nightingale) running it and the passing was just unbelievable.  I think it has a long way to go so we can use all our options.  But, it's getting there.”
