BOULDER, Colo. - Tera Bjorklund had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Kate Fagan added 19 points as No. 17 Colorado defeated previously unbeaten Washington 78-64 Tuesday night at the Coors Events Center.
Bjorklund connected on 11 of 17 shots for Colorado (7-1).
“We knew coming in that they play a 1-3-1 defense and we felt like going into it that we could go to Tera in the 1-3-1 and get her the ball inside and she could go at (Andrea) Lalum 1-on-1,” head coach Ceal Barry said. “I felt like she (Tera) had a good percentage tonight and she had 26 points.”
Reserve Amber Metoyer added 16 points and 12 rebounds, marking the first double-double of her career, as Colorado won its fourth straight game and seventh consecutive at home.
Giuliana Mendiola, last season's Pac-10 player of the year, had 20 points and Lalum 19 for Washington (5-1). The Huskies were off to their best start since 1997-98, when they opened with a 10-game winning streak.
Colorado led 59-39 seven minutes into the second half after Bjorklund hit four of five shots. Lalum, 8-for-12 for the game, had six of her team's nine points in that stretch.
Washington tried to rally with a basket off a steal and a 3-pointer by Gioconda Mendiola, getting the Huskies to 71-54 with 4:12 remaining. But Metoyer put the game away with a short jumper with 1:45 left after converting two free throws.
“Overall, they never quit,” Barry said of the Huskies. “They had a point guard who was hitting threes there at the end of the game.”
Bjorklund had 14 points by halftime, when Colorado led 42-31. The Buffs' reserves recorded 25 points off the bench.
The Buffs hit the court again Dec. 20 when they travel to Southern California for a 6:30 tip-off. Their next home game comes after the holidays with a Dec. 28 match-up against Wyoming. Start time for that game is 2 p.m.
