Golfers Ninth In Own Stevinson Invitational

March 23, 2003 | Men's Golf

STEVINSON, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team is in ninth place after two rounds of its own meet, and the Buffaloes enter the final round facing their most crucial single round of the season here in the fifth annual CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational.

Kansas State turned in a pair of under par rounds in posting a three-under 573 team score through 36 holes, with in-state rival Wichita State second at 579; the Wildcats and Shockers were two of three teams tied for the lead after the morning round.

Colorado is in ninth place with a 592 total, which is just eight shots out of third place, but more importantly for the Buffaloes, they are currently sixth out of 10 teams from NCAA District Five competing in this meet. And three other district teams are just three shots behind the Buffs.

"We've got three teams directly in front of from our district that we need to pass on Tuesday; if we do not, we severely hurt our chances of qualifying for the NCAA Championships," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "But if we pass them, we greatly enhance our chances. So it's going to be a crossroads day for us this season."

Senior Stephen Carroll put up a 74 in the morning, closing with a birdie after making what onlookers called an impressive double bogey on No. 17, when both his drive and second shot went far left and in the water. Despite taking two penalty shots, he got it up-and-down from 100 yards out, and then played solid the rest of the day in firing a second round 71. His 145 total has him tied for 14th individually, five strokes behind Pacific's Matt Hansen, who is in the lead after carding a pair of 70s for a 140 score on the 7,199-yard, par-72 Stevinson Ranch Golf Club layout.

Freshman Edward McGlasson is tied for 20th with a 72-74-146 scorecard, with another of CU's four freshmen competing here, Blake Moore, in at 150 after two 75s left him tied for 39th. Junior Jeff Hanson shot par in the morning, but had things get away from him in the afternoon in putting up an 81 for a 153 total.

"The youngsters don't know the nuances of this course, and that's definitely a factor," Simpson added. "But Jeff's round this afternoon was a disappointment for him and for us, and we'll need him and Stephen (Carroll) to put together solid rounds for us tomorrow because we need them to do well if we're going to do well as a team."

The final round will commence with an 8 a.m. (PST) shotgun start Tuesday morning.
