Golfers In 17th At ASU Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Colorado men's golf team might be 17th out of 18 teams through two rounds of the Arizona State Thunderbird/Savane Invitational, but a closer inspection of the numbers indicate the Buffaloes are holding their own in one of the toughest fields of the collegiate season.
No. 18 Arizona State shot an incredible 18-under par score of 270 in Friday's second round to rocket into the lead, as the host Sun Devils recorded a 551 team score, good for a six shot lead over Pepperdine. The Buffs, who shot their second best team round of the year in morning play (1-under 287), are in with a most respectable 580 total through 36 holes. It's just that the cream of the crop is here playing, and no one has more freshman here (three) than Colorado.
This is the final tune-up for the Buffaloes ahead of the Big 12 Conference Championship, and it's no doubt a solid test for the Buffaloes, as nine teams in this week's GCAA Precept/Coaches Top 25 poll are participating, including five in the top 10. (Colorado received votes in the poll, coming in 42nd.) How good is the field? Forty-seven players were in under par on a pretty tough golf course.
Freshman Edward McGlasson continued his solid play, as he's pacing CU through two rounds with a 70-72-142 scorecard on the 7,037-yard, par-72 ASU Karsten Golf Course layout. That gives him a 74.5 stroke average (26 rounds) to date for 2002-03, which stands to be the second lowest for a freshman in CU history.
Another freshman, Derek O'Neill, is next up for the Buffs (72-73-145), with senior captain Stephen Carroll next at 72-74-146. McGlasson is tied for 31st; O'Neill is tied for 58th and Carroll is sharing 71st.
TCU's David Schultz leads the individual pack, as his 10-under par scorecard of 68-66-134 was good for a one-stroke lead over BYU's Greg Machtaler (69-66-135).
"This is a good measuring stick for us; with so many quality teams here, and this being the last tournament before the Big 12s, it's giving the guys both a pretty good gauge of where they stand heading into the conference meet as well as against the best teams in the country," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "Yes we're 17th, and of course we'd like to be higher, but we've posted a good solid score. We want to close out preparations for the Big 12's with another solid effort tomorrow, and also see if we can move up a few pegs. We're just a handful of shots away from the top 10."
The final round will be played Saturday morning, the last competitive tune-up ahead of the Big 12 Championship meet set for the last week of April.
