ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Colorado men's golf team ended its season here Sunday doing something it had accomplished just once previously all year, but it added up to an 11th place finish in The Maxwell.

CU shot the high round Sunday, a 306, giving the Buffaloes an 882 total. It marked just the second time in 13 tournaments that Colorado scored its worst round of a meet the last day, as the Buffaloes, though playing with three freshmen in at least 11 meets, had developed a trademark for finishing strong.

No. 8 Oklahoma State cruised to a 19-stroke victory, as the Cowboys posted an 829 team score to easily outdistance runners-up Tulsa and SMU (849 each). OSU was the only team under par in the meet, coming in at minus-11. CU was fifth after the first round and stood ninth entering the final round.

Senior captain Stephen Carroll paced the Buffaloes here, tying for 14th overall after a 3-over 73 Sunday gave him a 212 total on the 6,442-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Country Club course. It was Carroll's seventh top 20 finish this year, and the fifth time he turned in CU's top tournament performance. Junior Jeff Hanson carded a final round 76 after opening with a pair of 71s to close with a 218 total, tying him for 33rd.

The Buffaloes did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1998, but Carroll will participate as an individual beginning this Thursday in the NCAA Central Regional in Manhattan, Kan.

"It wasn't the way we wanted to end things as a team, but it shouldn't put a damper on what the guys accomplished for the year," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "It was a tough day for the Buffaloes. The conditions changed dramatically from yesterday (hot, humid) to today (cold, windy), but essentially we just didn't adjust very well. The course played differently, but there were some pretty good scores put up. Most of our guys got off to a bad start and never really recovered."

Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan, last month's Big 12 champion, scored three rounds in the 60s here, with a 69 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 204 to claim medalist honors by a single stroke over Tulsa's David Inglis. Only five players were under par for the tournament.

Edward McGlasson was CU's top frosh in this meet, scoring a 77 Sunday for a 225 total. He finished the year with a 74.70 stroke average, the fifth best ever by a CU frosh; Kane Webber, Matt Zions, Knut Ekjord and Steve Jones were the only ones with a better number in their Buff freshman season. Blake Moore (227) and Michael Feuerstein (232) both struggled to season-ending 80s.

"We'll use this as a building block, as it gives us a good barometer of what the guys need to do this summer to stay focused and come back strong next year," Simpson said. "When the young guys report back in August, they won't be freshmen any more. They'll have a year under their belts and hopefully some amateur accomplishments this summer."
