Barry Brings In Burgin

Boulder - Ceal Barry, head coach of the University of Colorado women's basketball team has added Ron Burgin, former ThunderRidge High School girls basketball coach, to her coaching staff Barry announced Wednesday.

"Ron is an outstanding coach," said Barry. "What he was able to accomplish in two seasons at ThunderRidge was phenomenal. He's got some ties in Texas, a state we're anxious to recruit. I think he'll be a tremendous addition to our program."

Burgin was at ThunderRidge High School since 2001, where he led the TRHS girls team to the 2003 Colorado 5A State Championship with a record of 23-1 and a No. 21 ranking in the final USA Today girls high school poll. That same team also won their division at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix last season, earning the Grizzlies their first-ever national ranking. Since his arrival in Colorado in 2001, he has also worked with the Mile Hi Magic Basketball Club.

He was named the 2003 Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado Coach of the Year and 5A Coach of the Year, the Denver Post 5A Coach of the Year and the Continental League Coach of the Year. Burgin also taught psychology, health and physical education at TRHS. In his first season at ThunderRidge, the team went 21-3 and made the state semifinals.

Prior to his stint at ThunderRidge, Burgin was the head coach at Aubrey High School in Aubrey, Texas. He turned around the program at AHS from 2-26 in his first season in 1997-98, to a record of 23-9 during his final year there in 2000-01.

Burgin graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1985 and earned his masters of science degree in kinesiology from Midwestern State University in 1995.

The hire is subject to the approval of Boulder Campus Chancellor Dr. Richard Byyny.
