ARDMORE, Okla. - The University of Colorado men's golf team finds itself tied for ninth heading into its final round of the year, as the first two rounds of The Maxwell were completed here Saturday.

No. 8 Oklahoma State was running away with the team title through 36 holes, as the Cowboys owned a 13-stroke lead over second place SMU. With a 9-under total of 551, OSU is the only team under par, though seven schools recorded subpar rounds the second time around the track. Colorado is in with a 576 score, tied for ninth with Houston, but the Buffs are well within striking distance of a top five finish.

This is CU's final tournament as a team for 2002-03; the Buffaloes did not receive an invitation to the NCAA Championships, for the first time since 1998. The Buffs were in fifth after the morning round; the start of the second round was delayed about two hours due to a thunderstorm that moved through the area.

Senior captain Stephen Carroll is pacing the Buffaloes, as in Saturday's play he posted a 70-69-139 effort on the 6,442-yard, par-70 Dornick Hills Country Club course. Carroll, who will play in next week's NCAA Central Regional in Manhattan, Kan., enjoyed his first bogey-free round in college when he had 17 pars and a birdie on his afternoon scorecard. He is tied for eighth in the individual standings. Junior Jeff Hanson is having a good final outing of the year as well, as he recorded a pair of 71s for a 142 total, the 2-over par score tying him for 18th overall.

"Steve played solid the vast majority of the day, and the only time he was in trouble in the second round, he made two putts for par saves from outside of 10 feet," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "He hit 16 greens, and he had a lot of moderate distance putts, the 12- to-15 foot kind, that just missed going in."

Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan, last month's Big 12 champion, and Oklahoma's Blake Martin are tied for the individual lead with 5-under par 135 totals. Carroll is one of 10 golfers under par with 18 holes to play.

Simpson was also pleased with the play of his freshmen, as this marks the 11th time in 13 meets that he has taken at least three frosh on a road trip. "They're still freshmen, and they have a lot of potential, a lot of talent, and they need to keep working on the right things," Simpson said. "But if they do that, there's no way to go but up. They've had some great moments as freshmen, and I'm satisfied with the progress they've made, but in golf, there's so much to learn. You never stop learning."

Blake Moore is CU's top frosh so far in this meet, in with a 74-73-147 effort to stand tied for 42nd, with Edward McGlasson next at 76-72-148. Michael Feuerstein, who has seen the least action of CU's 2002 recruiting class, shot rounds of 78-74 for a 152 score in his fourth tournament action of the season.

The final round of the tournament is set for 7 a.m. mountain time Sunday.
