TERA BJORKLUND NAMED TO JOHN R. WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN TEAM

August 13, 2003 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER, Colo. - Tera Bjorklund, senior center for the University of Colorado women's basketball team has been named a John R. Wooden Award Preseason All-American, the Wooden National Advisory Board announced Wednesday.  Bjorklund is one of 30 candidates expected to make a run at the inaugural Women's John R. Wooden Award, which will be awarded next spring.

Bjorklund is coming off one of the most impressive seasons in Colorado history, averaging 18.5 points per game en route to First Team All-Big 12 honors.  She was blistering in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 24.7 ppg and finishing as the second-leading scorer in the 2003 Big Dance, including a dominant 34-point performance in CU's 86-67 win over North Carolina to get to the Sweet 16.

"I am pretty excited," said Bjorklund.  "Just to be recognized is nice. Coach Barry read me the list, and there are a lot of good players on it, so I feel pretty honored to be included."

"Clearly Tera is one of the top centers in the nation," said Colorado head coach Ceal Barry.  "Hopefully this preseason award will help to bring her the recognition she deserves heading into her senior season."

Over 250 voters, comprised of sports media members and women's college basketball experts across the nation, will cast their votes in March for the five-member All-American team and Wooden Award honor as the most outstanding female collegiate basketball player in the United States.

Bjorklund is currently in Colorado Springs with the U.S. World University Games team, which will travel to Daegu, Korea, on Friday for the tournament, which will take place August 20-31.  The team, comprised entirely of the Big 12 Conference All-Stars, has been training at the USOTC since Monday.
