BOULDER ? Colorado opened its 2003 home season in style with a 30-22, 30-23, 30-23 sweep over Oregon, in front of 704 fans at the Coors Events Conference Center on Friday night. The match was the first of the 2003 Colorado Invitational.

The Buffaloes improve to 7-2 overall while the Ducks drop to 2-5.

CU controlled the match offensively, hitting .323, netting 38 kills and only 16 errors on 99 attacks. Freshman Amber Nu'u had a solid outing recording seven kills on eight attacks for an .875 percentage, all of which are career highs. Junior Allison Barnes had similar numbers, with five kills on six attacks for an .833 percentage.

Senior Monique Gerlach led all players with 12 kills and hit .375. Allie Griffin had 11 kills, four blocks and hit .318. Sophomore Nicole Carr, who ranks third in the Big 12 in digs, had a match-high 13 defensive saves.

CU was able to establish leads early in games, avoiding the need to fight from behind. The Buffs never trailed in any of the three games after their 10th point had been scored.

'We did a good job tonight,' head coach Pi'i Aiu said. 'Offensively we played well, but we still need to pick it up a little defensively. We played with a lot of heart and spirit. We passed the ball a lot better tonight and I was pleased with that.'

Oregon was led by Jaclyn Jones and Kelly Russell who had nine kills each. The Ducks will play Villanova on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the CECC.

Colorado will take tomorrow off and face Villanova on Sunday, at 1 p.m., at the CECC.
