Colorado vs. Kansas State Post Game quotes

January 10, 2004 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL: “I think the difference in the game was the 12 (KSU) offensive rebounds in the second half.  I think the fact that (Nicole) Ohlde was pretty fresh also hurt us.  We did not have anybody to counter her when we rested Tera (Bjorklund); we did not have anybody that size.  They're a great team.  We kept them at bay up until then (when Bjorklund went out), and then their studs just broke loose.

“I think the big thing was Tera goes out and they go on a 10-3 run.  (Kendra) Wecker goes off and they had a lot of offensive rebounds ? Ohlde had a lot of rebounds.    I'm very disappointed.  It was a good opportunity for us that we let get away.”

ON NICOLE OHLDE: “She's huge.  She's in great shape.  I can't tell a difference between her first two minutes and her last two.  They have some pretty good ball players; they have some guns.  But, they are not totally dependent on Ohlde.”

ON TERA BJORKLUND'S PLAY: “We need to recognize at times that she's our best shooter.  She's our best field goal shooter.  I mean, she shot 70-percent.  We can't get away from that, and we have to keep getting her the ball.”

Kansas State Head Coach Deb Patterson

GENERAL: “It was an incredible Big 12 battle, and an incredible match-up between Nicole Ohlde and Tera Bjorklund. When you have two teams so much alike it could have gone either way. The support from our bench provided us the opportunity to win. We have so much respect for Colorado, and it felt great to win, because we appreciate them so much.”

ON C NICOLE OHLDE “She started slow, but she established at the beginning of the second half, and built up a rhythm. She made great statement plays with her rebounds on offense and defense. She (Nicole Ohlde) was a big part of the game, and she needed a chance to get into it, and it was worth it in the end. Timing was key with her, because she only played six minutes in the first half.”

ON G LAURIE KOEHN AND F KENDRA WECKER “They did amazing. They stepped up at critical times in the game, and both played excellent. They had to deal with a lot of adversity, and they responded very well to it.”

C Tera Bjorklund

ON NICOLE OHLDE “I guess it's no excuse (that we did not rebound well at the end).  Ohlde came up big at the end.  I take full responsibility for that.  She came up with some big second shots that I should have blocked out.”

GENERAL: “At the end our offense was not flowing like it was in the first half.  We weren't scoring like we were in the first.  We probably could have taken care of the ball better.  Mentally, we have to be tougher when taking care of the ball.”

F Amber Metoyer

ON MOVING ON: “You have to put it (the loss) behind you.  You can't dwell on it or it will hurt you in the next 14 games.”

G Emily Waner

ON SECOND HALF OFFENSE: “We just did not get as many threes (3-point shots) offensively.  They were covering better out on the three-line, so the drive was there (more often).”

G Kate Fagan

ON BOUNCING BACK: “This was one (game), and there are still 14 more games left.  We just need to start winning on the road, and pick up a few more at home.  We just need to play well on the road.  We have to bounce back from this.”

Kansas State Players

C Nicole Ohlde

GENERAL: “ It was important for us to stay tough mentally throughout the second half. We had to make sure we were executing on offense, and containing on defense. Colorado is an excellent team, and the crowd was really getting into it towards the end.”

ON EARLY FOUL TROUBLE “I thought our team really stepped it up in the first half, and the bench contributed really well. I thought the bench really came in and did what our coach told them to do, which was huge for them. It's always frustrating to sit out, and it wasn't something I really wanted to do, especially in a game like this against Colorado. They (Colorado) are an excellent team, and it was definitely tough to sit and watch. I was a little rusty coming in the second half, but I was pleased with the way we played as a team.”

ON COLORADO C TERA BJORKLUND “Tera (Bjorklund) is an excellent player, and I was lucky to have my team contribute as much as they did. I thought Tera really tore me up to be quite honest. She (Tera Bjorklund) is a great player with a lot of potential.”
