Colorado vs. Iowa State Quotes

January 17, 2004 | Men's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ricardo Patton

GENERAL: “I'm hoping that we learn something from Iowa State.  I think they put on an exhibition on how to run the floor with their guards and forwards.  Hopefully, we can take a page from their book on running the floor.  In the first half I thought it was a track meet.  We did not even have time to look up and see what the score was.  In the second half, I think our guys settled in and played solid basketball.

“The game was so fast ? a lot of octane out there.  They showed that (speed) more at home than on the road (on film).  You don't see speed on film, and you don't see size on film.   They blew it up more than we expected.”

ON GOOD SHOOTING: “Blair (Wilson) hit some huge shots in the first half.  I think Michel (Morandais) hit some in the second.  What that really does is pull the defense off David (Harrison).  That gives him some more chances and really opens things up.”

ON LAMAR HARRIS: “It's too bad that he doesn't like to practice.  If he learns to practice well, who knows what he could do.  Lamar plays to win; that's what enables him to rebound like that.  He's such a great kid; he's been a joy to have in this program.  It'd be a travesty if he left here without a degree.  But he's working hard.”

ON THE BIG 12 RACE: “My sleeper team is Texas Tech.  I think they are playing as well as anybody right now.  Oklahoma State is also playing well.  That's why you have to play well at home ? you have to win at home and not get behind the eight ball.

“We need to find that magic level.  We can't get too high after we win, and we can't get too low if we don't.  We have to remain even keel.  We have to find that level.”

Iowa State Head Coach Wayne Morgan

GENERAL: “ Colorado is a good team.  They played very well tonight and they deserve credit.  They will win their share of games.”

“We didn't shoot well, we missed rebounds, and some passes, and they played well.”

ON LOSS OF ROAD GAMES:  “I don't know about that (last year's losing streak on the road).  This is a different team, we lost tonight at Colorado, that is all I know.  Most teams in this league play well at home.”

ON COLORADO PLAYERS:  “(Blair) Wilson canned six of seven (three-point shots) in the first half.  Wilson is a good player and he got away from us, we have to give him credit.  If you want an opportunity to beat Colorado you have to contain (David) Harrison, and limit Wilson's shots, and limit (Michel) Morandais's shots.”

ON FIRST HALF PLAY: “I didn't feel well in the pre-game shoot around. I told Michel (Morandais) that my shot felt funny, but once the game started it wasn't funny anymore. I was having fun out there. The guys were getting me good looks and I was able to knock my shots down. When you get hot like that you feel like you can't miss, so I wasn't really thinking, I was just shooting and they were going in. That's something that doesn't happen enough.”

ON SECOND HALF PLAY: “I think that we came out with more determination. I wasn't as hot but we were able to play better as a team and get everyone open. Michel was able to get hot and we played a much better half.”

ON PACE OF THE GAME: “I was really tired. We are in good shape but that was a really fast-paced game. We found a way to hang tough and wear them (Iowa State) down in the end. We should have the advantage here at home, but it was a battle out there.”

ON DEFENSIVE EFFORT: “He (Jake Sullivan) is pretty small and he's not he fastest guy out there so I felt pretty confident in our match-up. This was a team effort, I was happy to do my part with my assignment.”

ON BREAKING COLORADO THREE-POINT RECORD: “It feels good. With the win today it feels even better. I think that I'll enjoy this tonight but it realty doesn't matter come Wednesday when we need another win. It's nice to have a stamp on Colorado history, so I think that I will enjoy this more as time goes by.”

F Lamar Harris

ON REBOUNDING PERFORMANCE: “Usually I don't put two halves together and I was able to do that today. The ball goes up there and I just go and get it. That's how I get my points sometimes also.”

F Michel Morandais

ON SECOND HALF: “They (Iowa state) know I like to go left so they made me make and adjustment. Until I got that fast-break bucket I wasn't really helping the team that much. Later in the game I was able to get some shots to fall and we pulled ahead.”
