Colorado vs. Missouri Quotes

January 18, 2004 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL: "I thought the six threes we hit in the first half really made a difference (in the game).  We shot the ball well.  I thought that made a big difference inside and opened up stuff for our post players.  We went on a little five minute spree (in the second half) where we didn't take care of the ball well.  We let them back in the game, and then Kate (Fagan) hit a big three (-point shot).  I felt
Missouri would be really tough coming in here because of Evan Unrau, and because of her high school days in Fort Collins.  She is certainly a great player for them.  I expected that she'd play her heart out and try to get a win in her last game here.  We were aware of that, and we were also aware of their (Missouri's overall) size."

ON MU G TRACY LOZIER: “We told Emily (Waner) to really focus on her.  She is the all-time leader in three-pointers and a great shooter.  I was here yesterday and saw (CU men's player) Blair Wilson break the (all-time school three-point) record and get really hot.  I did not want her to do the same thing.  We wanted to shut her down.  So we had Emily and Maria (Billingsley)
work hard on that."

ON RALLYING THE TEAM AFTER BJORKLUND WENT OUT: “I did not have to tell them too much.  They are smart enough to know they all have to pick it up (at times like that).  They knew she may not come back, so everybody had to play with some more edge."

ON BJORKLUND'S EARLY SCORING: “I felt like Kate fed her really well from the top.  Something we always want to do is make sure our first look (to Bjorklund) is from the top.  That's what we want to do is look inside and get her the ball."

Missouri Head Coach Cindy Stein:

GENERAL: In the second half, we were down by four, and I think that was the absolute turning point of the game. I also thought another big mark happened in the first half with Tera (Bjorklund) out, we still couldn't get the lead. Colorado did a great job maintaining their lead when (Tera) was on the bench. We didn't do a good job getting inside and in the second half, we couldn't convert and we had some defensive miscues. Our team gets down (emotionally) and we couldn't embrace our game plan, which is something I have to change. We are short at guard and the lack of experience hurts us, because we are not used to that kind of intensity. I think we were similar in stats with Colorado, but Colorado shot a heck of a lot better and that was a big difference.

ON COLORADO DEFENSE: “We were looking at playing our defense a little differently against Colorado, but they just kept hitting threes. We get scared in the zone, so we have to go man to man and they just kept making their shots. There is no secret for a good screen. It's just a matter of who gets it right, and we must get better at getting people the ball. Colorado had really good pressure and double-teamed Evan (Unrau). There was always someone on her and she did get 15 points and 11 boards, but they were really tough points to get.”

ON C TERA BJORKLUND:  “Tera is an incredible player, and I'm more and more impressed with her each time I watch her play. Her coming back (off the bench) really shows you how much character and heart that young lady can have. I would say she's probably one of the top 10 players in the country.”

Colorado Players

C Tera Bjorklund

ON KNEE INJURY: “It's a little stiff right now. It felt alright when I went back in there. We are going to do some tests tomorrow and see how I feel after that. I didn't think it was a tear or anything, but I was in pain. It was a hyperextension, and I have had that happen before so I was pretty sure that's what it was.”

ON FAN SUPPORT: “When I came back out there I was wondering why they (fans) were cheering, it surprised me. The fans were really great today, and they have always supported us so well.”

F Randy Wirt

ON TERA'S INJURY: “I know Tera (Bjorklund) pretty well, so when I saw her go down I was a little worried. Once I saw her get up and I saw her face I knew that she was going to be alright. I can tell when she is hurt and when she is hurting, and it looked like she was hurting.

“I just told Amber that she was going to have to work down low and do the same things that Tera does for us. We know that Amber can handle the ball down low and we have confidence in her when Tera is out.”

G Emily Waner

ON DEFENSIVE PRESSURE: “There was not as much pressure today as there has been in other games. They didn't pressure as much as Kansas State. We've been preparing to handle pressure all year. We've been practicing since October and we are ready for what teams throw at us.”
