Colorado vs. Baylor Quotes

January 31, 2004 | Men's Basketball

 Colorado Head Coach Ricardo Patton

GENERAL: “That was a really good effort by Baylor.  I thought they came in and fought their hearts out.  We told our guys before the game that every game for (Baylor) is an NCAA (tournament) game.  They are looking to be the spoiler for teams.  We jumped out early, though, and our guys played well.  It was a good win.

“It was difficult for our guys because they run a lot of something called false motion where they pass the ball out high and try to get some cuts behind you on the basket.  The one thing we did not want to do was chase the false motion.  We wanted to guard them from the 3-point line, and we did not want to get caught in (their offense).

ON BALL MOVEMENT: “I think is was pretty good against Missouri.  But, early on it was as well as it's been.”

ON DAVID HARRISON'S PLAY: “The biggest thing I've noticed is that he's better at passing out of the double team.  He's not panicking anymore, or hurrying as much to get it out.”

ON MICHEL MORANDAIS' PLAY: “The numbers speak for themselves.  I think he is comfortable out there now.  He's doing the things he's capable of.  It's crunch time now, and this is when he needs to step it up.  The way he was passing made me think that he'd end up with 10 or 11 assists.  Michel made some fantastic assists tonight.”

ON THE BIG 12'S DAILY UPSETS: “I hope we are still in the thick of things.  On any given night anyone can win.  We have just got to stay focused and get better on this home stretch.”

ON LAMAR HARRIS' REBOUNDING: “(The) coaches and I commented on his free-throw shooting.  But, he is a guy who has a knack for how the ball is coming off (the rim) like a Dennis Rodman.  He takes a lot of pride in his rebounding.”

Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew

GENERAL: “Well you have to ask yourself, do you want (Michel) Morandais and Colorado's shooters to have 3s or do you want their big guy (David Harrison) to have his (points)?  Tonight they got both.  That's when you know you have a good team when you have a good inside-outside game.  We had a good effort up, especially in the second-half.

We started to feel fatigue and it's hard to have the effort when you feel like that.  We had a season-low nine turnovers, so that was excellent.  But they shot 58 percent from the field and 47 percent from the three-point line. We are not going to beat anyone who shoots like that.”

ON BAYLOR'S DEFENSE: “We have two different defenses we played tonight and they scored with both of them and after that we ran out of defensive ideas. One thing we have are three-point shooters. Even though we shot well from there, we can't take 28 three's every game. I feel good about the effort we provided up here.”

ON DAVID HARRISON: “I said at the beginning of the season that he's the top NBA prospect in the league and he proved that tonight. Boy, I sure hope he goes pro at the end of the season.”

Colorado Players

C David Harrison

GENERAL/BAYLOR'S PLAY: “(Baylor) played really well tonight.  It is not hard to get up for any Big 12 game, if you come not ready you can lose.  Look at Iowa State and Kansas today; you can lose at any time.

“(Baylor) is depleted but they have good players.  We did a good job covering and blocking them.”

ON THE SEASON:  “Look at the Cal and Oregon State wins, at the beginning of the season, before we lost at home to Utah; we were playing well then.  We came unglued and now it is back together. We are clicking right now, and it is the best time to click coming into the end of the season.”

ON HIS PLAY:  “I was hitting my shots. I hit a left-handed shot that I was surprised went in.  I have been making my shots through and around contact in the last two games.  I have been playing well; hopefully it will continue. I thought I missed at least one or two shots tonight, I didn't realize that I had made them all.”

F Michel Morandais

GENERAL: “We weren't playing selfish. We were looking for one another, and being patient on offense, and we got open shots and hit jumpers.”

ON HIS RECENT PLAY:  “I think I am just more comfortable and stronger. We have a tough game coming up at Texas, so it feels good to play that well.”

ON THE TEAM:  “We have proven that by sticking together we can do things.  I think when things get tough in Texas we will stick together. “
