Colorado-Kansas Post-game Quotes

January 05, 2004 | Men's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ricardo Patton

GENERAL: “I told the team afterwards that that was a really good basketball team out there and I was talking about ourselves. I thought our team did a good job of battling back. I believe the team that was out there tonight wouldn't have dropped the previous two games.”

“All the guys are taking it pretty hard ? guys in the locker room, guys you're waiting for to come up ? the guys wanted to win this game. I'm hoping the guys won't forget this feeling and continue to get better.”

ON THE DIFFERENCE IN THE GAME: “They hit some big shots. We had some good defensive stands and late in the shot clock somebody would step up and hit the shot. We didn't make free throws. It really comes down to people making plays.

“I thought their depth in the post really made a difference because they kept bringing in big guys. Certainly when David Harrison isn't in the game, we look a lot smaller. Although that team that finished the half fought back pretty good.”

ON THE CROWD SUPPORT: “I hope (they continue to come). I they continue to give us a chance and I hope we won't disappoint and we'll continue to get better and I hope the guys won't forget this feeling. You say after an event that you won't and wake up the next morning and forget about it. This hurt and hopefully we won't forget about it.”

ON SITTING LAMAR HARRIS AND DAVID HARRISON IN THE FIRST HALF: “Didn't want to pick up the third four and that's pretty standard procedure. (David) Padgett picked up two fouls in the first half, and they kept him out of the game. " If we leave them in we run the risk of picking up the third foul and not playing them in the second”

ON THE PLAY OF G MICHEL MORANDAIS: “Michel played extremely hard. Late in the game he still denied the pass. That's what we expected from him because he's good enough to do it but again it was a great team effort.”

ON G MARCUS HALL: “Other than him going 0-for-3, regardless of how well you play on defense, at some point you've got to put the ball in the basket. " You've got to have guys who knock down shots if Blair (Wilson) and Michel (Morandais) are only guys shoot from the perimeter, it's going to be a long season.”

Colorado Players

C David Harrison

ON KU's DEPTH IN THE POST: “When Wayne (Simien) and (David) Padgett picked up their second fouls, they still had two people on the floor who were 6-9 and 6-10. We were undersized. " Two of them fouled out and I still finished playing against a 6-10 person. There were so many guys.”

ON THE FAN SUPPORT: “It was great seeing all the people stand up for us when we were making our run. I just want to thank them all for coming out. We're getting our stuff together. We're 6-4, not that bad, but not that good. It's going to be a special season still. I just want to thank them for coming out.”

F Michel Morandais

ON HIS IMPROVEMENT: “I just played better, but not as well as I wanted to. I didn't shoot the ball too well and I only scored once in the second half. I'm glad, but not really because I'm supposed to help my team more.”

ON SECOND HALF ADJUSTMENTS TO DEFEND HIM: “They put two point guards on me and they were quicker than the other wings. I was just not making it. It's early in the season, I remember last year we lost our first (conference game), it was at Oklahoma our first game. If we played like that against Richmond or Utah, we would have won those.”

ON TEAM CHEMISTRY: “It's not like we don't like each other or we're struggling but we're (Wilson, Morandais, Harrison) the upperclassmen here and we're supposed to carry the team. Until somebody else steps up, we need to do that. If we play good, we get no glory.”

ON THE LOSS: “It is hard, but we can't dwell on it. We still have 15 games left in the Big 12, and two more (non-conference) before Nebraska. We lost at home,  and we didn't lose at home last year in the Big 12, so we're not as good as last year, but we can't think like that.”

G Blair Wilson

GENERAL: “Those guys, you've got to give them credit, they hit big shots. They play great defense and hit big shots. It was nothing against us because they hit big shots and we couldn't do anything about it.”

ON THE KU FAN SUPPORT: “It's frustrating, but there's nothing we can do about it and we can't say what we want to say about it.”

ON THE COLORADO FAN SUPPORT: “I think we did feed off of it at times tonight. We played hard. I think we're the Colorado Buffaloes that people expected, minus a 10-minute first half run. We're back, we're still going to go back to the tournament. That's our goal.”

Kansas Head Coach Bill Self

GENERAL: “ We played well, exceptional offense and we were holding them well on defense.  The momentum changed for them down the stretch, but we hung in there.  They (Colorado) are a shooting basketball team, and we haven't seen that.”

“It has been nice over the break to be able to focus and give so much time.  I have told the guys to put in at least six hours a day, whether it be practicing twice or watching film (when they return to school).  It is easier to be hard on a team when you are winning.”

ON HARRISON:  “I think we did a good job trying to cover him.  We had two guys on him at all times but he fouled everyone out trapping and fronting.”

ON PLAYING AT COORS EVENT CENTER: “It was not revenge, it can't be when you play a team two to three times a year.  You can't get hung up on that, but it was really disappointing for these guys last year.  We have been doing great since Christmas and we are continuing.”

Kansas F Christian Moody

GENERAL:  “We were kind of scared at the end of the game, we were afraid that we were going to let it go.  Last year we got the score up and thought we had a big lead, and lost it.  The big guys fouled out last year too, so it made us nervous.”

ON DAVID HARRISON: “He is a great player.  His presence on the inside forced us to cover him with two guys.”
