NURMI ADVANCES TO ITA REGIONAL ELITE EIGHT

TULSA, Okla. ? University of Colorado freshman Veera Nurmi continued her winning ways on Friday upsetting number nine seed Nadja Woschek of Boise State, then defeating junior Jenny Trettin of Denver to advance to the Elite Eight quarterfinal round at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Region V Women's Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa.
The Finland native advanced to the main draw of 64 players the hard way having to qualify with two victories on Wednesday, then winning another match in the Round of 64 on Thursday. On Friday, Nurmi upset the ninth seed Woschek, 7-6, 6-1 in the Round of 32, then followed with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 winner over Trettin for her fifth consecutive victory in the Round of 16. Trettin advanced to the Round of 16 upsetting eighth-seeded Irina Lykina of Oklahoma 7-6, 6-2.
Second semester freshman Lynzee Kever cruised through her Round of 32 match with an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner over Iliana Paceco of Arkansas. Kever, ranked No. 67th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) then lost to Gabby Baker of Oklahoma in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
In doubles, the CU pair of Kendra Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys seeded fourth rolled to an 8-1 victory over conference rivals Lauren Hommell/Christine Skoda of Kansas in the Round of 32. The CU duo continued their winning ways in the Round of 16 defeating another Big 12 tandem of Gitte Osterman/Inke Reimers of Nebraska, 8-3.
In consolation singles play, Vanderdys received a first round bye and then defeated Marina Englebrecht of Arkansas State 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16.
