CU SOCCER BLANKS OKLAHOMA STATE 1-0
October 24, 2004 | Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. - Ashlie Mihalcin's ninth goal of the season turned out to be the lone goal on Sunday as the Colorado women's soccer team picked up a school record 10th shutout defeating Oklahoma State 1-0.
Â
"This was a very physically demanding battle from both teams," said Colorado head coach Bill Hempen. "We were fortunate to get a good, clear shot at goal."
Â
Mihalcin, who leads the team in goals, scored in the 48th minute when she sent her shot flying past former teammate and current Oklahoma State keeper Jeanne Rankin. Rankin transferred to join the Cowgirls after playing for the Buffaloes for two years.Â
          Â
Oklahoma State (11-5-2, 3-5-1 Big 12) attacked early as they had two corner kicks within the first minute of the game and had four consecutive shots that they could not get past Colorado goalie Jessica Keller.  The Cowgirls out shot Colorado (12-4-2, 5-3-1 Big 12) in the first half 12-5, but the Buffaloes limited Oklahoma State to just seven shots in the second half. Oklahoma State had prime opportunities to even the score late in the game, but Keller continued with her consistent play, as she has not allowed a goal since Baylor's Ginny Rosario-Tull got one past her on Oct. 15 (319 minutes).
Â
"Our kids fought and hustled against a team that desperately needed a win," Hempen said. "We won on the road and that is what you have to do to survive and move on in the Big 12 Tournament. We are excited."
Â
The 2004 regular season comes to an end when the Buffs travel to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Cornhuskers next Friday, Oct. 29 in a 6 p.m. (MT) kickoff at Abbott Sports Complex. A year ago, the Buffs stunned Nebraska in a 3-1 come from behind win in Boulder.
