Nurmi Named CU Athlete of the Week

BOULDER - Freshman tennis standout Veera Nurmi earned CU Athlete of the week honors after winning five straight matches in her first major collegiate tennis event this past Thursday through Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships at the University of Tulsa.Â

Nurmi won five straight matches, including a pair of qualifiers to advance to the Elite Eight of the ITA Central Region Championships at the University of Tulsa. In order to qualify for the main draw, the Finland native, needed to secure two victories in the Round of 64, then she turned around with three more victories in the main draw reaching the Elite Eight before losing.

Nurmi leads the team with seven wins and helped CU earn a berth at the team regional playoff next weekend. Colorado has earned the No. 3 seed when they play BYU this Saturday in the ITA team regional playoffs.Â

Others nominated for this week's award were Jen Thais (Soccer), Maragda Santillana (Volleyball), Marko Bundalo (Men's Tennis), Kenny Coakley (Men's Golf), and Joel Klatt (Football).

Women's Soccer: Jen Thais, Senior, Mission Viejo, Calif.
A week after the senior became the Colorado single game points (6) and goals record holder when she netted three on a career high six shots against Texas Tech, she became the program's single game assists leader with three against Oklahoma. In the Buffs last regular season home match of the season, Thais netted the game's first score, then assisted on the next three scores, including classmate Shannon Kellogg's, giving the senior class two of the game's four goals. With five points, one goal, one game winner, three assists, seven shots (five of which were on goal), she moved up on the career ladder in game winners (fourth with four), assists (third with 12), and shots on goal (third with 62).

Volleyball: Maragda Santillana, Junior, Barcelona, Spain
Santillana led CU with 19 kills in a 25-30, 30-28, 30-26, 30-21 losing effort against the No.16 Texas A&M Aggies this past Wednesday night. Only a couple days later, Santillana led the Buffaloes with 13 kills and had the team's only block , as Missouri swept the Buffs 30-21, 30-24, 30-24. Colorado, which has lost three straight for the first time since the 2002 season falls to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in Big 12 competition.

Men's Tennis: Marko Bundalo, Junior, Pancevo, Serbia & Montenegro
Bundalo advanced to the Round of 16 quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Regional at UNLV. After receiving a first round bye, Bundalo, the 10th seed, won three straight matches with victories over New Mexico State, Boise State, and Air Force. He shares a team-high seven wins this fall season.

Men's Golf: Kenny Coakley, Junior, Lakewood, Colo.
Coakley tied for 12th at Stanford's "The Nelson" with a 71-70-70-211. The Buffs finished strong placing third in the final round, but could only move up one spot to finish eighth overall.

Football: Joel Klatt, Junior, Arvada, Colo.
Klatt went 25-of-42 passing for 346 yards and two touchdowns, also recording one reception for 18 yards in CU's overtime loss to No.17 Texas A&M this past Saturday at College Station. The Buffs fell to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12, as they will next face No.9 Texas this Saturday at Folsom Field.
