WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SIGNS QUARTET FOR 2005-06 SEASON
November 11, 2004 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER - Caley Dow of Littleton, Colo., Jessica Berry of Little Rock, Ark., Hannah Skildum of North Oaks, Minn., and Heidi Warczinsky of Saginaw, Mich., have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball and continue their education at the University of Colorado in 2005-06, women's basketball head coach Ceal Barry announced on Thursday.
The four student-athletes signed during the November early signing period, which started yesterday and runs through Nov. 17.
"We are very happy about the four players we have signed," said Barry, who is beginning her 22nd season at Colorado. "They all have very good character, good work ethic and will make strong contributions to our program. They are also very good students."
Colorado is just over one week away from opening the 2004-05 season at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev. The Buffaloes return six letterwinners, including a pair of seniors, from a 2003-04 squad that went 22-8 overall, advancing to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament.
A look at the class of 2005-06:
Caley Dow, 6-2, Forward, Littleton, Colo. (Arapahoe)
A local product from Arapahoe High School, Dow was a 2004 first team All-Continental League pick helping the Warriors to a 12-8 record as a junior. She averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds while gaining honorable mention to the 2004 Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News Class 5A All-State teams for the second straight season.
Barry on Dow: "Caley is a very versatile player who has played in the triangle offense and understands it. She ran it with (former Colorado assistant coach) Kim LaLonde who coached her with the Boulder Rockies AAU team, so she will know our system."
Jessica Berry, 5-8, Guard, Little Rock, Ark. (Pulaski Academy)
A two-time Arkansas High School Activities Association All-State pick, Berry is beginning her senior season at Pulaski Academy. She led the Bruins to a 21-10 mark in 2004 averaging 20 points and eight assists per game while earning Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas second team honors.
Barry on Berry: "Jessica is a very strong outside shooting guard who came to our camp last summer. She is an extremely sharp shooter that doesn't miss very much."
Hannah Skildum, 6-0, Guard/Forward, North Oaks, Minn. (Mounds View)
Skildum averaged 11 points, six rebounds and three assists as a junior to lead Mounds View High School to a 17-11 mark last winter. She earned All-Suburban East Conference first team honors in 2004 helping the Mustangs to the Section 4-AA semifinals. Skildum, a Minnesota state champion in the high jump, played her AAU ball with a North-Tartan 16's team last summer that finished 34-7 and tied for ninth place in the national tournament.
Barry on Skildum: "Hannah is probably the most athletic of the four. She runs and jumps well. I expect her to contribute on the perimeter at off guard and small forward. She has great energy."
Heidi Warczinsky, 5-6, Guard, Saginaw, Mich. (Arthur Hill)
Warczinsky is in her third year as starting point guard for an Arthur Hill squad that is currently 17-2 and ranked No. 3 in Class A by the Detroit Free Press and No. 4 by the Associated Press. She is currently averaging 10 points, two rebounds, three steals and five assists per game for the Lumberjacks who begin Class A District 10 tournament play next week. Warczinsky helped Arthur Hill to a Saginaw Valley League title this fall with a perfect 9-0 record. She was an honorable mention to the Detroit News Class A All-State team as a junior. Warczinsky was named one of the top 30 players in the state by the Detroit Free Press just before the start of the season.
Barry on Warczinsky: "Heidi can play either guard position. She's a strong guard and I think she is going to help us in ball handling and passing in the triangle offense."
