Colorado Postgame Notes

u      Buffalo Heart Award.  It was presented postgame on the CU sideline to TB Bobby Purify; the award is presented by the “Fans Behind The Bench” to the player the fans observe to have the most heart (coordinated by season ticket holder and Boulder Buff Club member Patrick Grimes).  This was the seventh annual award by the group.

u      With the victory, Colorado is now bowl eligible at 6-4.  It was also Gary Barnett's 40th career win at Colorado (40-32).

u      For the second straight season, CU and KSU combined for 69 points; last year, KSU won 49-20, this year CU 38-31. It's the fourth time in the last five meetings the two have combined for 65 or more points.  The 38 points by Colorado was its most against K-State since a 54-7 win in Boulder in 1992.

u      WR Ron Monteilh (4-106, 1 TD). What a home finale for the senior; he had his first career 100-yard game, and the 64-yard touchdown reception from Joel Klatt for the winning points with five seconds remaining was his first career touchdown.  It was also the longest play from scrimmage for Colorado this season.  (It was the third 100-yard receiving game by a Buffalo this year; Blake Mackey (vs. OSU) and Dusty Sprague (at Texas A&M) had the others).

u      Other famous 64-yard passes at the end of the game to win it for Colorado?  There is one for sure?10 years ago on Sept. 24, 1994, the pass from Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook, via Blake Anderson tip, also covered 64 yards to give CU a 27-26 win at Michigan.

u      TB Bobby Purify (24-155, 2 TD rush/1-12 receiving; see above note as well).  Assorted accomplishments in his Folsom Field finale:

--He became the first player in school history to record 2,500 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving (he's one of just five at CU in the 2,000/500 club).

--He had the fourth 100-yard game of the season (ninth of his career).

--The 33-yard run called back in the first quarter was the third of his career of 30 yards or more; he was credited with 1 yard on the play, so the totals of those three runs are 176 yards (78 vs. Nebraska in 2001, 65 at Wash. St. this year).

--He concludes the game with 2,879 rushing yards (4th at CU), 501 receiving yards, and 3,380 all-purpose yards (5th).

u      Scoring Streaks.  CU added to its school record consecutive game scoring streak, extending it to 194; that is the longest streak in the Big 12 Conference and the sixth longest in the nation.  CU has scored in 106 straight games at Folsom Field and in all 73 in Big 12 Conference play.

u      First Career Starts.  WR Mike Duren started his first career game in his home finale, as CU opened in a three-wide receiver set.  DE Abraham Wright also made his first career start, while DT Brandon Dabdoub started for the first time this season in his senior home finale.

u      FS Tom Hubbard. Hubbard, who also started for the third time in his career, made his first collegiate interception near the end of the first quarter.

u      PK Mason Crosby. His 51-yard field goal in the first quarter was his fifth of the year from 50-plus yards, tying him with Ohio State's Mike Nugent for the most in the nation.  Also, of his 14 kickoffs that have been returned this year, 5 are inside-the-20 (1 of 1 today).  He has 36 touchbacks out of 51 overall kicks (23 out of the end zone), including six touchbacks today (4 end zone-plus).

u      Field Position.  Colorado's average field position for 14 drives was its 31; Kansas State's for its 12 drives its 23; the Wildcats started nine of their 12 drives at or inside their 20.

Big 12 North Division Scenarios

Big 12 North Division Standings

Team              W     L      Pct.       NU    MU      ISU      CU       KU     KSU    DIV      Other

Iowa State........3      3      .500       W       N27     ---        L          W         N20      2-1       (idle today)

Nebraska.......3      3      .500       ---       W         L          N26     W         L           2-2       at Oklahoma (tonight)

Colorado........3      4      .429       N26     L          W         ---        W         W       3-1

Missouri...........2      4      .333       L         ---        N27     W         N20     L           1-2       (idle today)

Kansas State.....2      5      .286       W        W         N20     L          L          ---       2-2

Kansas..............1      6      .167       L         N20     L          L          ---        W        1-3

How Colorado Can Win The Division:

1.   Colorado must beat Nebraska to reach 4-4 in league play;

      If this happens, Nebraska would have at least 4 losses.

2)   If (1) occurs and Iowa State loses to Kansas State and beats Missouri, the standings would look like this:

Team                              W     L      Pct.       3-Way   DIV

Colorado..................     4      4      .500         2-0       4-1

Iowa State..................     4      4      .500         1-1       3-2

Nebraska................. 4      4      .500         0-2       2-3

In the above scenario, the Nebraska-Oklahoma outcome would be rendered meaningless, as CU would own wins over both ISU and NU in a two-way or three-way tie.

If CU beats NU; ISU beats MU; MU beats KU; KSU beats ISU; and OU beats NU, COLORADO wins the division:

Team                              W     L      Pct.       3-Way   DIV

Colorado..................     4      4      .500         1-1       4-1

Missouri................... 4      4      .500         1-1       3-2

Iowa State..................     4      4      .500         1-1       3-2

If CU beats NU; ISU beats KSU; MU beats ISU and KU, and NU beats OU:

Team                              W     L      Pct.       4-Way   DIV

Missouri................... 4      4      .500         2-1       2-3

Colorado..................     4      4      .500         2-1       4-1

Iowa State..................     4      4      .500         1-2       3-2

Nebraska..................4      4      .500         1-2       2-3

In the above scenario, the Nebraska-Oklahoma outcome is not meaningless; if NU wins, it would force a 4-way tie, with Nebraska and Iowa State eliminated in the head-to-head round-robin and MISSOURI would then win the division.

If CU beats NU; ISU beats KSU; MU beats ISU and KU, and OU beats NU; MISSOURI wins the division:

Team                              W     L      Pct.       3-Way   DIV

Missouri....................4      4      .500         2-0       3-2

Colorado..................     4      4      .500         1-1       4-1

Iowa State..................     4      4      .500         1-1       3-2

Another scenario has COLORADO winning the division as the ONLY 4-4 team: CU beats KSU and NU; OU beats NU; KSU beats ISU; MU beats ISU; and KU beats MU.

CONFERENCE TIEBREAKERS Here's a quick breakdown of Big 12 Conference football tiebreaker procedures from 2004 Big 12 Football Game Procedures and the Dr Pepper Championship Guide (Article 9.18):

(a)   If two teams are tied, the winner of the head-to-head game between the two teams will be the representative;

(b)   If three or more teams are tied, steps 1-7 will be followed until a determination is made; if only two teams remain tied after any step, the

         winner of  the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative:

        (1)   The record of the teams will be compared against each other;

        (2)   The record of the teams within their division;

        (3)   The record of the teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (if three teams,

                 against 4, 5 and then 6; if four teams, then against 5 and then 6, etc.).

        (4)   The record of the teams will be compared against all common conference opponents;

        (5)   If the teams remain tied, then the representative will be the highest-ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series poll following

                 the completion of Big 12 regular-season (intra-) conference play shall be the representative;

        (6)   If the teams remain tied, then the team with the best overall winning percentage (excluding exempted games - e.g. 12th games,

                so-called preseason classics or at Hawaii, etc.); shall be the representative;

        (7)   The representative will be chosen by draw.
