Monteilh and Metivier Named Co-Athlete of the Week
November 18, 2004 | Football, General
BOULDER- Senior wide receiver Ron Monteilh and senior cross country stand out Renee Metivier have earned Co-CU Athlete of the Week honors. Monteilh earned this honor after recording four receptions for 106 yards notching his first career 100 yard receiving performance, and catching the game winning touchdown against Kansas State this past Saturday at Folsom Field. Metivier earned her half of the award after capturing the NCAA Mountain Region Championship Women's Individual title this past Saturday in Fort Collins.
Monteilh's numbers do not do him justice, as he came up huge for the Buffs' late in the fourth quarter when he caught a Joel Klatt pass at the 23 and ran the rest of the way for a 64-yard touchdown, giving Colorado a 38-31 lead with only five seconds left. The touchdown was the first of Monteilh's career, and could not have come at a better time; the reception not only won the game, it gave the Buffs their sixth win of the season making them bowl eligible and keeping CU alive in the Big 12 North Title race.
Following her Big 12 Championship victory Metivier continued to win big races this year, as she ran a time of 20:05:40, 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher at the Region Championships. Her first place finish not only gave her an automatic NCAA Cross Country Championships bid, but it helped Colorado's women's squad finish first in the team category and earned them an automatic team bid to the NCAA Championships.
Monteilh and the rest of the Colorado football team will finish up the regular season when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. next Friday, Nov. 26 as they take on Big 12 rival Nebraska (10:00 a.m. on ABC). Metivier will lead both of CU's cross country teams into action as they finish up their season at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Others nominated for this week's award were Ashlie Mihalcin (Women's Soccer), Amber Nu'u (Volleyball), Brett Schoolmeester (Men's Cross Country).
Women's Soccer: Ashlie Mihalcin, Junior, Golden, Colo.
Mihalcin tied the CU school record for single season goals (10) when she scored CU's third and final goal, on her career best fifth shot, in shutting out Utah (3-0) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Portland. It was the Buffs' first ever NCAA Tournament win.
Volleyball: Amber Nu'u, Junior, Aurora, Colo.
Nu'u had a career-high 16 kills in the Buffs (30-21, 30-11, 27-30, 30-19) loss to No. 20 Kansas State. Nu'u, making her fourth consecutive start in place of the injured Maragda Santillana, had a season-high 34 attacks and pitched in defensively with eight digs. Later in the week, Nu'u helped Colorado swept Oklahoma (30-24, 30-13, 30-24). The outside hitter finished with a match-high 17 kills, and also set a career-high .556 hitting percentage, recording her kills on
just 27 attacks with only two errors. The Buffs improved to 12-12 overall and moved back into sole possession of sixth place in the Big 12 at 7-10.
Men's Cross Country: Brett Schoolmeester, Junior, Sedalia, Colo.
Bret Schoolmeester ran to a career-best third-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Fort Collins. He finished as CU's No. 1scorer for the first time this season and was less than three seconds off the winning pace after moving up from sixth to third in the final kilometer of the race.
