Postgame Quotes- Colorado vs Texas

February 14, 2004 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL-“A loss is a loss.  We have to beat these teams before we can feel good about it. I think we let them get to the line in the second half.  That was the difference.  You are not going to win games like that.  Those are things you can control.  We weren't relying on help and we need to trust our defense.  Those are controllable things.  We didn't keep our head for the whole 40 minutes.  We still have a lot of basketball left.  We still have a lot of room for improvement and they believe in themselves.”

ON TERA BJORKLUND BEING ON THE BENCH-“The fact Tera was out for both halves was a factor.  She is a player we like to have on the floor.  She got into foul trouble and we know Stacy (Stephens) likes to take charges and she got that first charge on Tera.  That made a difference.  I think our team is not centered around one person (Tera Bjorklund).  She scores well, but our team has a team concept.  We still function when she is in foul trouble.  We did a good job without her.”

ON TEXAS C STACY STEPHENS-“They like to use her bulk and she is quick"she has quick feet.  She holds her own on the defensive end.”

ON ANNA NEDOVIC-“I think she will continue to be a good offensive threat.  I have been looking forward to that match-up (against Heather Schreiber) all season.  The fact that she can score is a bonus and she will only get better.”

ON CECILY JONES-“I think Cec(ily) did a good job in the eight minutes she played.  She was accountable.  She can a do a good job and do it well.

Colorado Players

TERA BJORKLUND

ON FOUL TROUBLE-“I wish I could have contributed more tonight, it is hard to be on the bench.  I was impressed (with her team).  I thought they played better without me in there.”

RANDIE WIRT

ON TEXAS-“They extended the pressure on us and got through our screens.  They are real physical, real strong.  You have to push and push.  (The last two minutes) was a mental lapse.  If you noticed, when we turned the ball over we went to the other end of the court and fouled.  A No.1 team will make those free throws at the end.”

EMILY WANER

ON COLORADO'S PLAY-“I thought we didn't play smart.  We broke down our confidence and built theirs up.  But, that's a lot to say holding them to that low of points (in the first half).”

ON PLAYING JAMIE CAREY-“I was ready to play her.  I wasn't intimidated by her.  I never played her (in high school), but I always watched her.  It was fun and I hope we get to play against each other again.”

ANNA NEDOVIC

ON TEXAS-“If we play them again in the tournament, I know we can definitely win.  I can't wait to play them again.”

ON GUARDING HEATHER SCHREIBER-“I guard Randie (Wirt) all the time in practice so it was not that different.  We work hard in practice to prepare.”  I always feel nervous and pressured but I forget about it after a couple seconds.”

Texas Head Coach Jody Conradt

GENERAL: “They got after us tonight. Colorado has to be the toughest defense that we have played so far.  They made it very difficult for us in the first half with their defense.  I just thought that both team played very well tonight, and Colorado is a great team.  Tonight's game is evidence on how many great teams we have in the Big 12 Conference.  There was a standard set, and we had to play up to it tonight.”

ON TERA BJORKLUND C: “She is a tough player, and we knew that coming into the game tonight.  She demands a great game.  You think that it was over when she went out, but it wasn't.  Colorado has very good players, and they demanded a great game tonight.”
