COLORADO BASKETBALL / Postgame Notes
Colorado Buffaloes 75, Kansas Jayhawks 56
(February 24, 2004; Coors Events Center, Boulder, Colo.)
No. 500. Ceal Barry became the 24th active coach in the NCAA to win her 500th game this evening, 417 of which have come at Colorado (in 637 games). Ceal is also just five games away from coaching in the most events ever by a CU coach, trailing Frank Potts' 641 (616 track, 25 football).
Tonight marked the sixth time this season that Colorado led a game from wire-to-wire in never trailing.
G Kate Fagan. With 6 three-point field goals made, it gives her 73 for the season, a new single-season record at Colorado as she topped the old mark of 71 set by Shelley Sheetz (1992-93) and Jenny Roulier (2001-02). Her 20 points led the team for the fifth time this season, the second time she has scored 20 this season (24 vs. Buffalo).
C Tera Bjorklund. She became the 14th player tonight in CU history to play 3,000 or more career minutes (36 tonight for 3,009 total). She's already second on the all-time scoring list, as she surpassed the 1,800-point plateau tonight as well (14 points for 1,805 total).
Double Doubles. Bjorklund (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Randie Wirt (17, 10) have now combined for 11 double doubles this season (Wirt 6, Bjorklund 5), but this marked the first time this year both did it in the same game. Bjorklund (26, 11) and Amber Metoyer (16, 12) did it in a 78-64 win over Washington back on December 9.
Colorado now leads the all-time series with Kansas by a 28-25 count, as tonight marked CU's eighth straight win in the series. That ties for the fifth longest streak by the Buffs over a Big 12 Conference school (CU has never lost eight straight games to a league school). A closer look:
16 vs. Iowa State (1991-97)
16 vs. Kansas State (1990-97)
12 vs. Oklahoma (1988-93)
10 vs. Texas A&M (1992-current)
8 vs. Oklahoma (1994-97)
8 vs. Nebraska (2000-current)
8 vs. Kansas (2001-current)
This is the second time in school history that Colorado has strung together four 10-plus conference win seasons, the first time since the Big 12 was formed for the 1996-97 season. The Buffaloes have won 10 or more league games 13 times (5 times in the Big 12, 6 times in the Big Eight and twice in the Intermountain Conference). The previous streak of four happened in the Big Eight: 11-3 in 1991-92, 12-2 in 1992-93 and 1993-94, and 14-0 in 1994-95. The current run includes 11-5 in 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03 and 10-4 this season.
Colorado jumped out to a 36-18 lead with 4:51 left in the first half, but the Jayhawks pulled to within 38-33 after a 15-2 spurt over a six-minute span. But CU countered with a 20-4 run to take a 58-37 lead, with KU getting no closer than 13 the rest of the game.
The teams combined to shoot just 16 free throws (KU 9, CU 7); the seven were a season low tried by CU. The previous low FTA game was against Wyoming, when CU was 8-of-8 and Wyoming was 2-of-5.
Colorado will end the conference portion of its schedule with two straight league road games for the first time since closing out Big Eight play in 1994-95 at Kansas and Kansas State.
