GOLFERS HOLD FOURTH IN OWN CU-STEVINSON RANCH INVITE
March 29, 2004 | Men's Golf
STEVINSON, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team is in fourth place after two rounds of the 6th Annual CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational, as a record day by Big 12 Conference rival Kansas has the Jayhawks out in front with one round left to play.
The Buffs, ranked No. 43 in the most recent GolfStat rankings as of last week (No. 41 in Golfweek), are coming off a victory in last week's Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, CU's first win in a major tournament in almost four years. But three league rivals stand in the way of a second straight win for the Buffaloes.
Kansas, ranked No. 23 in the nation, holds the lead with a 14-under par team score of 562, a 36-hole meet record which included a single round record 280 (8-under par) in Monday's second round. No. 31 Kansas State and Iowa State, just outside of the top 100, are tied for second, both five back at 567 but still 9-under par. Then come the Buffaloes, in a 1-under 575.
Colorado is bidding to win back-to-back tournaments for the first time in its history, but has won twice during the same season three times, the last in 1991-92, when the Buffs won the Air Force Falcon and Stanford invitationals. In addition, senior captain Kane Webber is gunning to become the third Buff to win back-to-back medalist honors, last done by Steve Jones in 1980-81 (BYU, Arizona State) and prefaced by Hale Irwin, who did it in style in 1966-67 (the Big Eight and NCAA titles).
Webber, however, has his work cut out for him, as he's eight shots out of the lead, shared by Iowa State's Tyler Swanson and Drake's Wes Pantling, who came in at 9-under 135; the previous tournament best for 36 holes had been 138 by Stanford's Joel Kribel in 1999. Webber opened with a 2-under 70 but had some bad luck in the afternoon, as a triple bogey on the 160-yard, par-3 No. 12 led to an afternoon 73; he was 3-under at the time before he hit his tee shot into a hazard and took two shots to get out. He is tied for 13th over with a 1-under 143 effort.
Sophomore Edward McGlasson is pacing the Buffaloes, as he recorded a 3-under 69 in the morning and came back with a 71 in the afternoon for a 4-under 140 total, tying him for seventh place. McGlasson had 11 birdies, seven bogeys and 18 pars on the day, including a run of three straight birds on his 32nd through 34th holes on the 7,191-yard, par-72 Stevinson Ranch Golf Club course layout.
"Anytime as a team when you play under par on a quality golf course, you can't really be disappointed," said CU head coach Mark Simpson. "We're playing fine, and we could be in the lead if we didn't have to count several double and triple bogeys. You can't do that and expect to win a golf tournament. We still have a chance, but we will need to put up our best round of the season (Tuesday) to do it, and this team is capable of that. Kansas is 14-under, and they're obviously playing well, as is Iowa State and Kansas State."
Colorado had to count four double and two triple bogeys, thus accounting for a lost 14 strokes. "Everyone has to count some bad holes, but we need to cut down on those if you want to stand out from the rest and be in contention to win," Simpson cited.
"The course is playing easier this year than the previous five years," Simpson added. "When the wind comes from this direction, it makes it a little easier of a go, but regardless, it's still a tough golf course. From our standpoint, we're hoping the wind shifts up about four notches and it'll be set up tough for the last round. So we're not out of this yet."
Only one time in the five meets to date has a winning team been under par, and that was when Kansas won in 2002 with a 3-under 861 score. Missouri was also under par that year (-2); thus, four teams currently under par would double the number in the first five tournaments.
Sophomore Blake Moore is tied for 22nd after a 72-73--145 scorecard, while another sophomore, Kenny Coakley, is tied for 26th with a 74-73--147 performance. Coakley closed strong, recording an eagle and a birdie to play his last three holes at 3-under. It was one of a tournament best four eagles by the Buffaloes, as Webber had two and sophomore Derek O'Neill the other. O'Neill had a pair of 74s for a 148 total, tying him for 43rd.
CU's other senior captain, Jeff Hanson, is playing as an individual, as he has been working on some putting technique changes along with nursing a slight wrist injury. His results thus are not counting towards CU's overall team score, but his 73-74--147 is good for a respectable 32nd-place tie.
The final round of the tournament will commence at 8 a.m. Pacific time Tuesday morning.
FIRST DAY NOTES: Illinois State senior Brian Anderson recorded the second hole-in-one in tournament history, as he aced the 214-yard, par-3 No. 7 en route to a first round 69" Iowa State's Tyler Swanson and Drake's Wes Pantling, tied for the lead at 135, shaved three strokes off the tournament record for 36 holes, set by Stanford's Joel Kribel in 1999" The single round course record for the meet, a 66 by CU's Ben Portie in 2002, still stands despite 39 subpar rounds Monday" Kansas placed all five of its designated scorers in the top 17 after both the morning and afternoon round, as the Jayhawks' 282 score was one off the meet's single round record (Missouri opened with a 281 in 2002); KU toppled that mark by coming back with an 8-under 280 in the afternoon" It's 562 total is a 35-hole tourney record" Iowa State used its best single round of the year, a 4-under 284, to place second after the first 18 holes, and then the Cyclones bettered it by one to hold second through 36" Kansas State tied the second best single round with a 281 in the afternoon to tie ISU for second" In the first round, 16 players bettered par, with another nine equaling it while nine also failed to break 80; in the afternoon round 23 topped par and three matched it" All six Colorado players on the trip placed in the top half for the first round (actually top 36)" Five schools have players competing as individuals here; if scored as a separate team, the group would have shot a 297 in both rounds, led by Kansas State's Tim Moody, who recorded a 1-under 71 to start the day" Over half of the field of 75 golfers is comprised of underclassmen, as there are 20 freshmen and 20 sophomores competing here, with 15 juniors and 20 seniors filling out the rosters.
