MEN'S GOLFERS SEVENTH IN LOUISIANA

LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Colorado men's golf team is tied for seventh place after the first two rounds of the 19th Annual Louisiana Classics were complete here Monday.
No. 46 Southern Methodist is the only team under par with 18 holes remaining, as the Mustangs turned in a 574 team score to lead No. 42 Texas Tech by five strokes. Colorado, No. 35 in the latest Golfweek rankings, is tied for seventh place with No. 19 Tennessee and Texas State with 18-over par 594 scores. CU is trailing district rivals Kansas (fourth, 581) and Tulsa (fifth, 586), but is ahead of two others, Missouri (619) and Arkansas State (622), both of whom bring up the rear in the 15-team field.
CU is out to post its best finish ever in this meet, as in 13 previous trips, the Buffs' best efforts were fifth place finishes in 2000 and 2001.
Senior captain Kane Webber posted identical scores of 74 in the morning and afternoon to come in at 4-over 148, tying him for 27th individually, while sophomores Kenny Coakley and Edward McGlasson both turned in carbon copy scorecards of 76-73?149 to tie for 35th place. Sophomore Derek O'Neill shot a 79 in the morning but rebounded with CU's best round of the day with an even-par effort the second time around on the 7,083-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course layout.
Kansas' Andrew Price is in the individual leader, as he used a second round 68 to post a 4-under 140 total to take a two stroke lead into the final round. A trio of SMU golfers holds the second through fourth spots in the standings, as only four playes broke par through 36 holes.
"The wind was blowing pretty good in the morning, not a vicious wind but swirling, but it let up a bit in the afternoon so there were a lot better scores the second time around," CU head coach Mark Simpson. "This was the toughest course we've seen this spring. The greens are small, and they hide the pins a bit, and that's make for a bit of a rougher go. Par was an exceptionally good score in the morning, and still was a pretty good effort in the afternoon. Derek really hung in there after opening with a 79 to battle back and score it even."
The final round of the tournament will be completed Tuesday.
