GOLFERS FINISH NINTH IN LOUISIANA
March 09, 2004 | Men's Golf
LAFAYETTE, La. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team had some final round struggles and slipped two spots to a ninth place finish as the 19th Annual Louisiana Classics were completed here Tuesday.
No. 46 Southern Methodist held off charge from No. 34 Kansas to defeat the Jayhawks by one stroke, as the Mustangs won with an 865 team score, or 1-over par. Colorado, No. 35 in the latest Golfweek rankings and tied for seventh after two rounds, finished in ninth with an 893 score. CU trailed two district rivals here, Kansas and Tulsa (fourth, 869), but defeated two others, Missouri (919) and Arkansas State (930), both of whom brought up the rear in the 15-team field.
Senior captain Kane Webber recorded the third best score in the final round, a 3-under 69, to tie for sixth individually with a 1-over par 217. That matched the CU stroke leader's best individual finish of the year and was his third top 10 and sixth top 20 effort in seven tournaments in 2003-04. It was also the third best individual effort by a Buffalo in 14 trips to this meet.
No other Buffalo shot better than 75, as sophomore Derek O'Neill was the next Buff in the standings, as he closed with a 3-over 75 for a 226 total to tie for 46th on the 7,083-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course layout.
Kansas' Kevin Ward shot the best round of the day, a 6-under 66, to earn medalist honors with a 210 (-6) scorecard, good for a one-stroke victory over SMU's Will Dodson.
“This course just plays tough when the wind is swirling, and there are enough holes out there where if you just miss hit it a little bit, you get into trouble,” CU head coach Mark Simpson. “Plus, the greens here have subtle breaks and they can get to you when you keep missing four footers all day. Some of the guys were really frustrated. Kane played really well, his was easily one of the best rounds of the day.
“But one of the reasons we come down here is we need to learn how to play on Bermuda grass, because we're going to need to when we get to nationals,” Simpson continued. “It's always an adjustment to learn how to play on this kind of grasses, especially in tough conditions. So we're not discouraged; we know we can play a lot better than this, so in the long run it will help us. And it never hurts you in this game to get humbled once in a while, either.”
The Buffaloes return to action in two weeks (March 22-23) at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
