Men's Golf's Webber Named Athlete of the Week

April 13, 2004 | General, Men's Golf

BOULDER--Kane Webber receives athlete of the week honors after recording the best collegiate round of his career, 66, in the final round of the Purdue Boilermaker Tournament on April 11 to win his second tournament in 4 years of playing at Colorado in a span of 19 days.

The 66 was the low round in the tournament, and it came on a day when only nine players broke par. In his career round, he rallied from two strokes back to win by three shots. His effort led CU to a second place finish, as the Buffs defeated four top 25 teams and 10 top 50 teams in the meet.

The Lismore, Australian native won the Western Intercollegiate back on March 23, to lead CU's men's golf team to their first major tournament victory in four year. His performance not only earned him athlete of the week, but accredited him the national player of the week by Golfweek.

Webber is in position to rewrite the CU record book. Currently the senior is the leader in 16 team statistical categories, his season stroke average is now 71.03, a full stroke ahead of Hale Irwin's record of 72.04 in 1965-66, with his career average dipping to 72.90, bettering the all-time CU mark of 73.47, set by Scott Petersen in the early 1990s. Webber also owns a 70.5 average this spring, almost a gaudy two strokes better than the school mark of 72.44 set by Ben Portie just two years ago.

Others nominated for this week's award are Dathan Ritzenhein (track and field) and Jessica Vanderdys (women's tennis).

TRACK AND FIELD: Dathan Ritzenhein, Sophomore, Rockford, Mich.

Colorado sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein ran solo in arguably the University of Oregon Pepsi Invitational's top performance with a 24-second meet record in the 3,000 (7:50.39) and the fastest clocking by an American collegian in 2004 (and sixth overall on the U.S. for collegians or post-collegians including indoors and outdoors). His time also marks the second fastest time in the world this year.

"Dathan's 3,000 meters was at the end of the meet and it had to have been 80 or 84 degrees," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "It was a little breezy. He went out right away, and he was hoping to run 63s and to get through the first mile in 4:12 but he came through at 4:09 and was completely alone. To run that time in this conditions means he's very, very fit. I'm sure that's our outdoor 3,000 meter record, and a great rust-buster for him."

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Jessica Vanderdys, Sophomore, Centreville, Va.

Colorado's Jessica Vanderdys upset a pair of opponents this past weekend defeating the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) tNo. 114th ranked player Irina Lykina of Oklahoma, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(7) at No. 2 singles. She teamed with senior Morgan Sall at No. 1 doubles upsetting the SoonersGÇÖ Anda Perianu and Heather Saluri, 8-3, who are ranked No. 29 nationally.

The pair of victories is the highest wins over a ranked opponent for the sophomore from Centreville, Va. Vanderdys is 9-4 this spring at No. 2 singles and 8-6 with Sall at the top doubles slot.
