Cheer Squads Fair Well At NCA Championships
April 06, 2004 | General
BOULDER - The University of Colorado cheer team fared well in last weekend's National Cheerleading Association National Championships, as the Buffaloes posted third and seventh place finishes in the competition, held in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The cheerleaders placed seventh (out of 19 schools) in the Small Coed Division I category, won by the University of Houston with San Diego State placing second. That bettered CU's top previous finish of 15th in 2001, and a year after Colorado was 21st, its second-best all-time effort.
In the Stunt Team category (four members), the CU quartet of Kyra Sherman, Joanna Small, Megan McGrath and Natalie Jones tied for third with a foursome from Virginia Tech. Louisville won with Wright State the runner-up. The Buffs were seventh a year ago in the event, its previous best finish.
"We had the most amazing weekend," CU cheer coach Travis Prior said. "Our team goal was to advance to the final round and we did that by executing a very clean routine in the preliminaries. We had an amazing finals performance and ended up in seventh place in the country in our division. This is the first time any collegiate team in Colorado has advanced to the finals and the highest placing in both categories for the University of Colorado. We could not have asked for a better finish to our season which began in August.
The event will be broadcast later this month on both CBS (April 17) and Fox Sports Net (April 24).
