April 06, 2004 | General, Men's Golf, Tennis, Track and Field
BOULDER, Colo.-- Sophomore Chris Abuan sprinted to two titles in the Tom Benich Classic at the University of Northern Colorado last Saturday, earning this week's CU Athlete of the Week honors.
It was an outstanding day for this 5'10" Colorado native, who placed first in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, despite frigid temperatures and overcast skies. They mark the first titles of the outdoor season for Abuan, who won the 200 in 22.22 and the 400 in 48.07, just six one-hundreths of a second off his personal best of 48.01.
Colorado will be back in action next Saturday, April 10, in Eugene, Ore., at the Adidas Invitational.
OTHER NOMINEES FOR THIS WEEK'S AWARD ARE: Kendra Strandemo (women's tennis), and Edward McGlasson (men's golf)
Women's Tennis:
Junior Kendra Strandemo won her lone match of the week for the Colorado women's tennis team, and won her third straight match at No. 3 singles. Despite the CU loss to No. 14 Texas A&M (6-1), Strandemo defeated her opponent in three sets. Hailing from Encinitas, Calif., she also improved her No. 3 singles position to 7-2 overall. So far this spring, Strandemo is 5-2 at No. 3 singles against Jumbo Dozen competition. The three-year letterman majoring in theater was Big 12 Conference position champion at No. 4 singles a year ago.
Men's Golf:
Sophomore Edward McGlasson finished ninth at the CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational with a 69-71-74--214 score, leading the Buffs to a fourth place finish. It was his second straight ninth place finish in major tournament, having done so the previous week in the Western collegiate.
