COORS CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS WBB NON-LEAGUE SKED
July 15, 2004 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER ? Head coach Ceal Barry has completed her team's non-conference schedule for the upcoming season, and CU's Coors Classic looks as if it will be one of the premier in-season tournaments anywhere in the sport in 2004-05.
All four teams in the Classic were participants in last year's NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, headlined by Louisiana State, which made it to the Final Four where it lost a controversial 52-50 decision to national runner-up Tennessee. LSU (27-8) joins Maryland (18-13), a team it defeated in the second round of the tournament, and Pennsylvania (17-11), which lost to eventual champion Connecticut. Colorado, 22-8 a year ago, is hosting the Coors Classic for the 18th straight season, as it originated in 1987.
Other non-league schedule highlights include exhibition games in Boulder against Fort Lewis and South Dakota before the Buffaloes open the season Nov. 19 in the Nevada Nugget Classic in Reno. That field features host Nevada, Cal State-Fullerton and NCAA participant Loyola-Marymount. Games against Front Range rivals Wyoming (Dec. 1 in Laramie) and Colorado State (Dec. 8 in Boulder) precede final exams at CU, with a western road swing against Pacific (Dec. 18) and Washington (Dec. 21) set before Christmas.
"I feel we've put together a competitive non-conference schedule that should help us get ready for Big 12 Conference play," Barry said. A record seven schools in the conference earned NCAA berths last winter.
Here is the non-conference portion of CU's 2004-05 schedule; the conference schedule is being finalized by the Big 12 office and will be released later this summer (#?denotes exhibition game, all times mountain):
