Mihalcin and Santillana Named Co-CU Athletes of the Week

BOULDER- Soccer junior midfielder Ashlie Mihalcin and volleyball junior outside hitter Margada Santillana earned Co-CU Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending September 12, 2004.
Mihalcin's goal, it was her team leading third goal of the season, helped Colorado gain it's first ever victory against an ACC opponent (CU's 2-1 win over the Wake Forest) in five tries. Mihalcin also assisted on the game winning goal against Utah in the Wake Forest/adidas Soccer Classic. The Golden, Colo. native has scored all three of her goals off corner kicks, her most recent goal was a key part of CU's success against Wake Forest and the Buffs' win over Utah to claim the Wake Forest/adidas Soccer Classic Championship.
Santillana had a career high 27 kills in Colorado's four set (30-22, 30-32, 30-23, 30-22) victory over North Carolina in the championship game of this past weekend's Colorado Invitational. Santillana's effort boosted the Buffs' to their fourth straight Colorado Invitational title. The Ses Joaquim, Spain native was instrumental in CU's 3-0 (San Diego, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina) tournament record, and improving the volleyball team's overall record to 5-2.
Others nominated for this week's award were Alex Ligon (football).

Ligon led Colorado's defense against Washington State with seven tackles, six of them solo, and four for a loss in the team's 20-12 victory over the Cougars. In addition the defensive end forced a fumble and recorded three of the team's eight quarterback sacks; the most by the Buffs' defense in four years, and the most by an individual since the 2000 season. In addition to being nominated for the CU Athlete of the Week, Ligon was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.
