EUGENE, Ore. ? Timely serving and strong offensive play by University of Oregon senior hitter Lauren Westendorf helped propel the Ducks to a sweep of the University of Colorado 30-24, 30-28, 30-25 in the second game of the Oregon Classic at McArthur Court Friday night.
CU falls to 2-1 overall while Oregon is 2-0. Colorado will face Trinity Western University (B.C.) in an exhibition match tomorrow at 6 p.m. MST in the final match of the tournament.
Westendorf had a match-high 20 kills on 32 attempts with only three errors for an impressive .531 hitting percentage. She also led the Ducks in serving with four of her teams' 12 aces.
Junior Allie Griffin led Colorado with 11 kills. Junior Nicole Carr had nine kills and a match and season high 18 digs. After averaging .410 over the season's first two matches, CU struggled Friday night for just a .202 clip against the Ducks (36 kills-17 errors-94 attacks).
Earlier on Friday, Griffin had 21 kills and CU hit over .400 for the second straight match as the Buffaloes swept Cal State-Northridge 30-26, 30-20, 30-11.
Griffin hit a blistering .643 for the match with 21 kills on just 28 attacks and three errors. She nearly matched her season-opening performance against Denver on Sept. 1 where she hit .679 (21k-2e-28att). Griffin was also one of four Buffs with double digits in digs. Carr led the way with 14, Griffin and Maragda Santillana each had 12 while Ashley Nu'u had 10. Nu'u also had a career high seven kills and equaled her personal best 43 achieved Wednesday against Denver.
The Buffaloes hit .410 in the match logging 56 kills on 117 attacks with only eight errors. The eight errors are the fewest by CU since it had just seven in a three-game win over Maine on Sept. 14, 2002. Nu'u hit .462 (7k-1e-13att), Lara Bossow hit .444 (4k-0e-9att) and Austin Zimmerman hit .429 (7k-1e-14att).
