Colorado-Manhattan Quotes

January 02, 2005 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL ? “On the positive, I am glad to be 7-4 and have a winning streak going into Big 12 play.  The difference in this game was getting the ball into Kara (Richards) and Jackie (McFarland) to take advantage of the height inside.  The game was closer than we thought it should be.   We were not mentally prepared as we should have been and that is my fault.  We need to be ready every time we put on a uniform.   I didn't feel as though that I did a good enough job in preparing them.  It could be youth but they know what they need to do every time in getting ready to prepare for a game.  I thought on offense we were sluggish and that our defense needed to get the tempo going.  No intensity, we had no desire coming out in the second half and I have spoken a lot about that to them.”

ON DEFENSIVE INTENSITY ? “It's not like we can't get in a defensive position.  It is a mindset and we need to focus on it.  We can win if we focus on it.”

ON FUNDAMENTALS ? “We are not the type of team that is a powerhouse we don't have seven All-Americans coming off the bench so we have to be technically sound because we are not going to overpower many teams yet.”

ON INSIDE PRESENCE ? “I felt like we could get the ball down on the block.  (Jasmina Ilic) has versatility on the inside and I feel like it is something she will continue to improve on.  At the 15 minute mark of the second half, we decided to throw the ball in there and let Kara go one-on-one.”

ON WINNING STREAK ? “It is really nice to have a five game winning streak because it is nice to look back on it going into Big 12 play and having something to work towards.”

ON KARA RICHARDS ? “It helped getting her more touches from both the forwards and the guards giving it to her.”

F Jasmina Ilic

ON ENTERING BIG 12 PLAY ? “We can't get away with momentum swings like we did today in the Big 12 because they are the best teams in the nation.”

C Kara Richards

GENERAL - “My confidence is way up now.  We have been working hard in practice and the managers have been getting out pads and having us get ready more physically.   My teammates have been helping me out a lot on when deciding to take it up and when to pass it up.”

Manhattan Head Coach Myndi Hill
GENERAL - “Our team played hard and really hung in there. We were just outmanned from the start. Some of our kids played their best basketball of the year.”

Colorado really took it to us in the second half. When there was a bout 11 or 12 minutes remaining in the game (Colorado) just started pounding the ball inside. We're 5'11 at our tallest. The media guide says 6'0, but we don't have any six-footers. (Richards) was a big part of their offense, obviously, finishing with 24 points.”
