Buffs Fall to Sooners 2-1 in Overtime

October 02, 2005 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team had trouble finding the back of the net here Sunday afternoon, and the end result was a 2-1 overtime loss to the University of Oklahoma in Big 12 Conference action.

Colorado outshot Oklahoma 20-15 with eight shots on goal to OU's seven, but the Buffs were not able to convert.

"We pretty much out played them, once again," said senior midfielder Fran Munnelly.  "We didn't play poorly at all, we had a few chances to score early and we really could have been up 2 or 3-0 in the first half.  I missed a breakaway...we had them pinned up in the corners and we just can't seem to finish. There's a thing we're looking for and we can't seem to find it."

Oklahoma jumped out to the first lead of the game, scoring immediately after the halftime whistle.  Michelle Enos took a pass from Savannah Scott and Lauren MacIver and finished at the 45:58 mark of the match.

CU got the equalizer at the 63:53 mark of the game, when Andrea Hurley was whistled and carded in the penalty box.  Hermann Trophy candidate Munnelly took the ensuing penalty kick and made it, knotting the game at 1-1.

Munnelly's penalty kick proved historic, as it was her 27th career goal, making her the all-time leading goal scorer in Colorado history, moving past Melissa Cartmell.  It was her fifth goal of the season, tying her with Katie Griffin for the team lead.

The Sooners converted the game-winner when Hurley hit a deep pass that found Savannah Scott behind the defense.  Scott then dribbled past CU goalkeeper Jessica Keller and placed the ball in the back of the net for the win and her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Colorado will play two more games on the road next weekend, first traveling to Texas to take on the Longhorns this Friday, October 7 at 6 p.m. mountain time.  Texas and CU have identical 2-2 conference records, with CU at 5-5-2 and UT at 5-5-1 on the year.  UT were 2-1 winners over in-state rival Texas A&M today.
